13 killed 16 missing as Typhoon Lekima hits China

first_imgBeijing: At least 13 people were killed and 16 others missing after Typhoon Lekima made landfall in the early hours of Saturday in China’s Zhejiang province, according to state-run media here said. The typhoon will move north at a speed of about 15 km/h, with gradually weakening force, the National Meteorological Centre (NMC) was quoted as saying by the China Daily. The storm will sweep through Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces before making another landfall in the southern coastal areas of the Shandong Peninsula late Sunday, the NMC said. So far 13 people were killed and 16 others missing, the report said. The NMC issued a red alert as the super typhoon approached on Friday, before downgrading the level to orange as the winds eased to 144 km/h on Saturday morning. The storm on Friday past the northern tip of Taiwan, where nine people were injured, thousands of homes lost power temporarily and more than 500 flights were cancelled. It is the first time that the Shanghai Disneyland, which was opened in June 2016, has been closed due to inclement weather conditions, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. People who have booked tickets for the Shanghai Disneyland on Saturday can visit the park on any other day within the next six months, according to the resort. Those who have purchased tickets for the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ musical on the day can contact the purchasing channels to reschedule or apply for a refund, it added. More than one million people, including 253,000 people in Shanghai, were evacuated before the storm struck, the Xinhua said. In Zhejiang province alone, 288 flights were cancelled, and ferry and rail services were suspended as a precautionary measure. Local authorities have deployed rescue teams of nearly 1,000 members, with 150 fire engines and 153 boats on call. More than a quarter of a million people were relocated in Shanghai, where the high-speed maglev train that links the city to one of its airports was suspended. The typhoon blew down nearly 3,000 trees and snapped about 100 power lines, 80 of which have been restored so far. Shanghai is hit by heavy rainstorm since Friday afternoon. The Lekima is expected to move at about 15 km/hr northward and westward with abatement of wind.last_img read more

Ottawa responsible for inquiry into military murdersuicide Nova Scotia premier

first_imgHALIFAX – Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil says he believes the responsibility for an inquiry into the death of Afghan war veteran Lionel Desmond and three of his family members rests with Ottawa.McNeil made the comment in the legislature Wednesday in response to a question from Opposition Leader Jamie Baillie, who noted that Ottawa doesn’t seem interested in investigating the horrific crime.Desmond shot and killed his mother, wife and daughter before taking his own life earlier this year in a rural community near Antigonish, N.S.“We believe the responsibility for the inquiry rests with Ottawa,” McNeil said in the legislature. He noted that the province’s Justice Department is examining its options, but he stopped short of saying he would call a provincial inquiry.“I will commit that our department of justice … will continue down that road in the spirit of potentially looking at whether or not there should be an inquiry in our province and what role we would play with the national government,” he said.Outside the house McNeil said that he wasn’t either ruling an inquiry in or out, as the provincial government waits for a report from the medical examiner. When pressed by reporters he wouldn’t commit to calling one.“There may be other steps that we as a province can take but it’s premature for me to make any of those assumptions until I finally see what we hear back from the investigation that’s ongoing,” McNeil said.Desmond’s sisters, Cassandra and Diane Desmond, journeyed to Ottawa last week to get answers from federal officials but say they were largely ignored.Federal officials insisted the decision on whether to call an inquiry rests solely with the Nova Scotia medical examiner’s office.Lionel Desmond, a former infantryman who served two tours in Afghanistan, fatally shot his mother Brenda, his wife Shanna and their 10-year-daughter Aaliyah in their home last January. The tragedy gained national attention after relatives said he didn’t get the help he needed to deal with PTSD after he was forced from the military for medical reasons in 2015.In Ottawa last week, a spokesman for Veterans Affairs Minister Seamus O’Regan said the federal department had conducted its own internal review of the case, but hadn’t made the results public because of privacy concerns. The renewed call for an inquiry from Desmond’s sisters came two weeks after Ottawa released a suicide prevention strategy aimed specifically at current and retired military personnel.last_img read more

Lawmaker withdraws antiporn bill citing dubious origins

first_imgPROVIDENCE, R.I. – A proposal that would have required a filter for online pornography that could be lifted with a $20 fee was withdrawn Tuesday by a lawmaker who cited its “dubious origins.”Sen. Frank Ciccone said he pulled the bill after The Associated Press reported Monday that the legislation had been pushed around the country by a man with a history of outlandish lawsuits including one trying to marry his computer as a statement against gay marriage. The measure, pushed in statehouses across the country by a group led by Chris Sevier, has been described as the Elizabeth Smart Law after the teenager kidnapped from her Utah home in 2002.Ciccone, a Democrat who represents Providence, said he made the decision after the AP reported that Smart, now a child safety advocate, had sent a cease-and-desist letter to backers of the bill and “was in no way involved with this legislation.” He said he felt misled by the group pushing the bill.“But not only me. I assume there’s quite a few other people,” he said, adding he assumes lawmakers in other states also will pull their bills. “A lot of us had misinformation.”The legislation had drawn criticism from groups including the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, an anti-pornography advocacy group. The centre demanded last year that Sevier stop claiming it supported his work. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which opposes the idea, has tracked about two dozen similar bills in 18 state legislatures, none of which has passed.Sevier and supporters say the bill would protect children and others by making pornography and sites that allow human trafficking more difficult to access.Sevier said he chose Smart’s name because she has spoken about the negative effects of pornography, including that pornography during her captivity “made my living hell worse.”After being told by the AP that Smart’s lawyer was sending a cease-and-desist letter, Sevier said the name Elizabeth Smart Law was an “offhand name” given to the legislation by lawmakers. The bill also was promoted as the Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation Prevention Act.“Obviously, we’re not trying to hurt Elizabeth Smart, for God’s sake,” Sevier said. “We don’t really care what it’s called. We just want it to pass. And we’re going to see to it that it passes, and the law is on our side.”Smart’s new book, “When There’s Hope: Healing, Moving Forward, and Never Giving Up,” which addresses her nine-month abduction ordeal and stories of others who have survived adversity, was released Tuesday.A federal judge in Utah on March 16 threw out a lawsuit from Sevier that targeted gay marriage by arguing he should be able to marry his laptop. Similar lawsuits in Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina and Kentucky have been dismissed.Sevier was sentenced to probation after being found guilty in 2014 of harassment threats against country singer John Rich. Sevier previously told the AP he didn’t do anything wrong and the case came after lawsuits between the men.The bills differ in some details but generally include requiring internet service providers, or those who sell internet-capable devices, to install filters that screen out obscene material or sites that facilitate prostitution. The blocking can be lifted with a $20 payment. Republicans and Democrats have sponsored it.The Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union say the idea is unconstitutional, including because it would install onto everyone’s computer a censorship filter that would screen out lawful content. Before withdrawing the measure, Ciccone had said he sponsored it because children “have easy access to materials that no child should be viewing, such as pornography and other highly offensive or disturbing material.”A Rhode Island Senate spokesman, Greg Pare, had called it “a national bill” modeled after one in New Jersey, where similar legislation has not been voted on.Pare cited the HumanTraffickingPreventionAct.com website that Sevier is behind, which says at the top the act is “referred to as the Elizabeth Smart Law.” A spokesman for Smart said she has nothing to do with it and there was “no authorization to use her name.”Sevier has said he met with Smart’s father and “he knows about it.”Smart’s spokesman said her father met with a group pushing the idea but suggested she send the letter.last_img read more

Ban asks Sri Lanka to heed calls for accountability transparency

5 June 2009Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today reiterated his appeal to the Government of Sri Lanka to heed international calls for accountability and transparency, and for an inquiry into alleged abuses committed during the recently concluded conflict with Tamil rebels. “It is crucially important that the Sri Lankan Government follow up on all the promises that they have made,” Mr. Ban told reporters following an informal discussion with Security Council members on Sri Lanka.Last month, Sri Lanka’s Government declared that its military operation against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was over, ending more than two decades of fighting. In the joint statement issued at the end of his 22-23 May visit to the country, Mr. Ban and President Mahinda Rajapaksa agreed that the country had now entered a new post-conflict phase and faces many obstacles relating to relief, rehabilitation, resettlement and reconciliation. “Whenever and wherever there are credible allegations of violations of humanitarian law, there should be a proper investigation,” the Secretary-General said today. “Any inquiry, to be meaningful, should be supported by the members of the United Nations, and also should be very impartial and objective,” he added. Mr. Ban also stressed that it was time to unite, and warned against “the risk of triumphalism in the wake of victory,” as this will hinder ongoing efforts by the Sri Lankan Government and people, and the international community, to help heal the wounds inflicted during the long-running conflict. The UN remains ready “to facilitate ongoing efforts by the Sri Lankan Government in healing the wounds through national reconciliation and through inclusive political dialogue,” he stated. The world body, which has been focusing its efforts on supporting the Government in aiding the 290,000 people who fled the fighting in recent months, also stands ready to continue providing humanitarian assistance, he added. read more

Security Council stresses need to end impunity after latest attack on peacekeepers

7 November 2011The Security Council today stressed the need to end impunity for those who attack peacekeepers, after one soldier serving with the joint United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur was killed and two others injured on Sunday in the latest incident in the Sudanese region. “The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack on a UNAMID patrol in Darfur,” the 15-member body stated, referring to the peacekeeping mission by its acronym. “They called on the Government of Sudan to bring the perpetrators to justice, and stressed that there must be an end to impunity for those who attack peacekeepers,” added a statement issued to the press by Ambassador José Filipe Moraes Cabral of Portugal, which holds the Council’s rotating presidency for this month.Sunday’s attack, which was also condemned by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, took place near Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. It comes less than one month after three peacekeepers were killed in an ambush in North Darfur and is the latest in a series of hostile actions directed at UNAMID personnel, as well as aid workers.UNAMID peacekeepers conducted a search of the area after the attack and apprehended a suspect who was handed over to the Sudanese police, the mission stated in a news release. The Joint Special Representative for Darfur, Ibrahim Gambari, strongly condemned the attack, which brings to 34 the number of UNAMID personnel killed in hostile action since the mission was deployed nearly four years ago.“I am deeply distressed by and in the strongest terms denounce all violence on our peacekeepers, who work relentlessly to bring security and protection to the people of Darfur,” said Mr. Gambari, who is also head of UNAMID. He pointed out that any attack on international peacekeepers is a war crime, and called on the Sudanese authorities to start a full investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible. read more

WatchLoblaw pulled Frenchs ketchup because it was cannibalizing PC brand sales leaked

TORONTO — A leaked internal memo sent to some Loblaw employees said the grocery chain decided to stop stocking French’s ketchup because it was “cannibalizing” sales of its in-house President’s Choice variety.Loblaw confirmed the memo’s existence but said it wasn’t an official one.We are in the process of delisting French’s ketchup because it is cannibalizing the sales of PC ketchup and has had little impact to Heinz ketchupThe memo addressed to grocery managers and retailers said it intended to explain why French’s ketchup was being pulled from store shelves.“We are in the process of delisting French’s ketchup because it is cannibalizing the sales of PC ketchup and has had little impact to Heinz ketchup,” reads the memo. The Canadian Press obtained a photo of the memo from someone who says they are a Loblaw employee. The employee, who wished to remain anonymous due to fears of workplace reprisal, identified the sender of the memo as a senior director at the company.Loblaw, however, described the sender as a mid-level employee who is a member of the company’s operations team for a group of stores.Loblaw to re-stock French’s ketchup after social media backlash‘Bye. Bye. Heinz’: French’s ketchup sells out after online post praising it and its Ontario-grown tomatoesHow Leamington, Ont. — where the tomato is king — rallied to save its Heinz plant“The memo was unofficial, misinformed and sent by a staff member prior to (Tuesday’s) decision to restock French’s ketchup,” Kevin Groh, vice-president of corporate affairs and communication, said Wednesday in a statement.“Customer preference was the single reason the product was removed from our shelves, and the single reason it is back.”Loblaw announced Tuesday it was reversing its decision to discontinue selling French’s ketchup following social media outcry.French’s ketchup became an Internet darling after a man’s Facebook post lauded the U.S.-based company for using 100 per cent Canadian-grown tomatoes.Other Canadians answered the call to support local farmers and demand for French’s increased. People shared stories of their local grocers being unable to keep French’s ketchup in stock due to high demand. The memo indicates Loblaw was concerned about French’s ketchup eating into its President’s Choice profits, but Groh reiterated his company’s position that French’s ketchup simply wasn’t selling.“In past, French’s ketchup has not come close to matching the sales of the other brands — even when discounted,” Groh said. The leaked memo also says that social media buzz didn’t necessarily translate to actual sales. But the memo does take issue with the notion that French’s ketchup is a Canadian-made product. It says French’s ketchup contains Canadian-grown tomatoes, but it is made in the U.S.A spokesperson for French’s said the ketchup it sells in Canada is produced in both Canada and the U.S.Loblaw’s President’s Choice ketchup, on the other hand, sources its tomatoes from California, but is produced in Canada.“If we truly want to support Canadian, we must rally behind PC ketchup since it is made in Canada,” the memo says.Groh said one brand is not more Canadian than the other, but President’s Choice is continuing conversations to purchase tomatoes from Canadian farmers if high-quality produce can be available in the amount needed for the right price.“We have not yet found that balance,” he said. The Canadian Press read more

Police are working to verify their identities.Amateur video captured some of the heavy automatic gunfire that erupted when French forces raided an apartment outside Paris this morning. But as the raid began, a woman in the apartment blew up a suicide vest.Police ordered residents to stay inside, and neighbors were evacuated and searched.Officers focused on one apartment that neighbors say is where the raid’s targets were holed up. TimorLeste UN relocates families of staff as security concerns heighten

The United Nations today announced that all UN families and non-essential staff members will begin to be relocated from Timor-Leste to a temporary safe haven in Darwin, Australia, because of heightened security concerns.Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Representative in the troubled nascent country, Sukehiro Hasegawa, said in Dili, the capital, that “a temporary relocation for non-essential staff is the most judicious choice at this time.”Mr. Hasegawa added that the UN will still maintain more than 100 international staff in Timor-Leste while others will continue to work from Darwin. Stressing that this measure is a temporary one, he expressed hope that the arrival of Australian and other international security forces would allow a return to a secure environment for the Timorese people “many of whom are now living in a heightened sense of panic and fear.”He expressed his appreciation to the Australian Government for providing Australian security personnel to protect the UN compound where several hundred UN personnel are working and staying overnight. The United Nations remains committed to supporting and assisting the people of Timor-Leste, officials with the UN office there, known by the acronym UNOTIL, said.On Thursday, army soldiers in Dili opened fire on unarmed police, killing nine and injuring 27 others, including two UN police officers. The violence had begun when army elements launched an attack on national police headquarters in the capital city. After an hour, UN police and military advisers negotiated a cease fire that was agreed to on the condition the police surrender their weapons and leave unarmed.Unrest started last month when five people were killed and 60 injured in clashes after the dismissal of 594 soldiers – a third of the total armed forces. The Secretary-General has dispatched Ian Martin, currently the head of the UN Human Rights Mission in Nepal, to Dili to assess the situation first hand.Mr. Martin was Mr. Annan’s Special Representative in East Timor in 1999, as it was called then, when it voted for independence from Indonesia, which occupied the country after Portugal left in 1974. read more

Super Bowl sets Twitter record with 241 million mentions of game power

Super Bowl sets Twitter record with 24.1 million mentions of game, power outage and Beyonce by Barbara Ortutay, The Associated Press Posted Feb 4, 2013 6:20 pm MDT NEW YORK, N.Y. – Beyonce’s splashy show, a freak power outage, and —oh, yeah— a captivating game of football combined to generate a record 24.1 million posts on Twitter during Sunday night’s Super Bowl. That’s up from 13.7 million last year — and that doesn’t even include chatter surrounding the ads.Twitter said in a late Sunday blog post that about half of the more than 50 national TV spots that aired during the game included a “hashtag,” a word or phrase preceded by a number sign that’s used to organize subjects on the short messaging site. During last year’s game, only one in five ads included one. Brands ranging from Oreo to Tide and Budweiser, meanwhile, captured online buzz by linking the blackout to their brands in humorous tweets.Super Bowl XLVII, like the London Summer Olympics and the U.S. presidential election, was yet another moment in which Twitter became the platform for millions of people to share quick reactions and participate in a massive, public conversation. Though it’s not as popular as Facebook Inc. or its buttoned-up cousin LinkedIn Corp., Twitter’s surging popularity during big events is a testament to its reach and utility. The question is whether these moments can translate into revenue for the 7-year-old company. The company makes money by charging advertisers to promote individual tweets, accounts or trends designed to spark a conversation. Research firm eMarketer estimates that Twitter will book advertising revenue of $545.2 million this year, up 89 per cent from 2012. Next year, worldwide ad revenue is expected to hit $807.5 million, a 48 per cent increase from 2013.Tweetable events such as the 34-minute Super Bowl power outage are ripe with marketing potential, provided that brands act quickly.“It’s really clear right now that Twitter has a lock on real-time conversation on the Internet,” says eMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson. To capitalize on this, Twitter has to show advertisers that it pays to promote their tweets — even though fans are likely to spread the catchiest slogans on their own, free of charge. That’s what happened with a certain cream-filled cookie on Sunday. It took Oreo’s marketers roughly 10 minutes after the power went out to tweet a picture of an Oreo cookie in the half-dark with the words: “You can still dunk in the dark.” As of Monday afternoon, the image had been shared on Twitter more than 15,000 times. Tide followed suit with the slogan “we can’t get your blackout. But we can get your stains out” with more limited success. The message was re-tweeted about 1,300 times. Calvin Klein, meanwhile, tweeted a video of a shirtless, chiseled male model doing crunches “since the lights are still out…”Such “real-time marketing” is still in its infancy, but Williamson expects this to change, as more companies develop the ability to respond to events immediately.”“To do what Oreo did actually takes a lot of pre-planning,” she says.Laurie Guzzinati, spokeswoman for Oreo owner Mondelez says the power outage was a natural moment to engage consumers. The cookie’s TV ad had a planned social media component asking people to follow Oreo on Twitter and post photos on Instagram. The company had set up a “social media command centre” that included people from Oreo’s brand team, the ad agency 360i and other partners whose job was to follow the Super Bowl and interact with fans on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere.Mondelez likely spent the going rate of as much as $4 million on its Super Bowl television spot. But Guzzinati says the company didn’t pay Twitter anything for the “dunk in the dark” picture. Still, Twitter says advertisers moved quickly following the outage.Matt McGee, editor-in-chief of the blog Marketing Land, counted 26 Twitter mentions in the 52 national spots that aired during the game. Facebook, meanwhile, got only four shout-outs, while Google Plus walked away with zero (though Google Inc.’s YouTube scored one mention from Hyundai).“When it comes to second-screen advertising, it’s Twitter’s world now and there’s no close second place,” McGee wrote in a blog post late Sunday night. “Last year, brands split their focus on Twitter and Facebook with eight mentions each. This year, brands recognize that Twitter is where they need to try to attract the online conversation around one of the world’s biggest events.”David Berkowitz, vice-president of emerging media at 360i, which worked on the Oreo campaign, says Twitter has done a good job tying itself into major television events.“If you look at (Twitter’s) trending topics any day especially during prime time or major events, they’re heavily fueled by television,” he says. “So TV is responsible for Twitter’s growth in general.”He thinks Twitter has done a better job than other social media sites like Tumblr and Pinterest in proving it’s the place to be when it comes to talking about big events online.“A large part of it right now is just showing this is where the conversation is happening and building their brand around that,” he says. “Even with other very successful social media sites, no one is better at conversation than Twitter.”__AP Retail Writer Mae Anderson contributed to this story. Canadian dollar closes lower amid strengthening greenback positive Chinese data

Canadian dollar closes lower amid strengthening greenback, positive Chinese data AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email TORONTO – The Canadian dollar closed lower Monday as the U.S. currency steadily advanced during the session, which in turn put pricing pressures on commodities. The loonie gave up 0.32 of a cent to 87.92 cents US, giving back a chunk of its three-quarters of a cent jump Friday in the wake of from a much stronger than expected jobs report for October. The dip in the currency also came amid data showing some softness in the Canadian housing sector.Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. reported Monday that housing starts came in at an annualized rate of 183,604 units in October, down from 197,355 in September, amid a slowdown in the multiple-unit segment that includes condominiums. Generally, economists had expected a rise to about 200,000 starts. The higher greenback helped sent the December crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange down $1.25 to US$77.40 a barrel.December copper edged two cents lower to US$3.02 a pound while December gold bullion faded $10 to US$1,159.80 an ounce.Meanwhile, data released overnight showed that China’s export growth slowed to 11.6 per cent in October from a year earlier, beating analysts’ expectations of a 10 per cent rise. October’s export growth was down from September’s 15.3 per cent growth. Imports rose 4.6 per cent from a year earlier, slightly below forecasts calling for a five per cent gain. The trade surplus of the world’s second-biggest economy also beat expectations as it widened in October to US$45.4 billion from $30.9 billion in September, higher than forecasts that called for a $42.3-billion surplus.Other data showed China’s consumer price index rose 1.6 per cent in October from a year earlier, the same increase as in September. The rise in consumer prices was well below the government’s target for the year of 3.5 per cent.Meanwhile, investors will be looking for other American data this week to reinforce the view that the U.S. economy is by far the global outperformer. The consumer will be in focus Friday as U.S. retail sales data for October are released. The other major Canadian report for the week, Statistics Canada’s September survey of manufacturing shipments, is also being released Friday. by Malcolm Morrison, The Canadian Press Posted Nov 10, 2014 6:42 am MDT read more

No 2 Clemson goes 120 with 5635 win over Gamecocks

CLEMSON, S.C. — Trevor Lawrence threw for a career-high 393 yards, Adam Choice rushed for three touchdowns and No. 2 Clemson capped a perfect regular season with a 56-35 victory over South Carolina on Saturday night for its fifth consecutive rivalry win.The Tigers reached 12-0 for the second time in four seasons and for the third time in program history, starting with its 1981 national title season.Clemson (CFP No. 2) kept pace for another title run with their latest success over the Gamecocks (6-5), its longest since winning seven in a row from 1934-40.Jake Bentley had career highs with 510 yards — the second most ever allowed by Clemson — and five TDs for South Carolina. The Tigers had not given up that many points in 28 games since a 42-35 win over Virginia Tech in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference title game. The Tigers will try for their fourth straight ACC title when they take on No. 24 Pitt in the championship game at Charlotte, North Carolina. Not that South Carolina didn’t throw a scare into the Tigers — or give defensive co-ordinator Brent Venables something to yell about leading into the ACC title game.South Carolina, which had lost the last two rivalry games by a combined 90-17 score, was supposed to have little chance to hang with Clemson. But it was the Gamecocks who struck first and kept on going. Bentley threw for 302 yards and three TDs in the opening half, including scoring throws of 67 yards to Kiel Pollard and 75 yards to Deebo Samuel to stick within 28-21 at the break.Clemson’s offence was relentless early on with four touchdowns on its first four possessions, two rushing scores by Choice and another on a 1-yard leap into the end zone by 315-pound Christian Wilkins.Wilkins came up flexing in celebration, then struck the Heisman pose — which drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and ire of coach Dabo Swinney who got in Wilkins face for a minute or two on the sidelines. It was far from the only bit of bravado by the Tigers. After Lawrence’s 22-yard TD pass to Tee Higgins to put Clemson ahead for the first time 14-7, the freshman quarterback stared down the South Carolina sideline. But that’s common in a heated rivalry where some in the home crowd booed the Gamecocks’ band at halftime.Choice had scoring runs of 1, 2 and 13 yards. His last one gave Clemson 41 rushing TDs this season to set the program single-year mark.Travis Etienne ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns (the last with 39 seconds left) to give him 19 to set that single-season record.Samuel had 10 catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns while Gamecocks receiver Shi Smith had nine grabs for 109 yards and a score. The teams played offence like they were in the Big 12 combining for 1,344 yards — 744 by Clemson and 600 by South Carolina.THE TAKEAWAYSouth Carolina: The Gamecocks were down three starters on the defensive line and had little hope of putting pressure on Clemson’s offence. They’ll need to find some healthy bodies quick with a hurricane-cancelled makeup game with Akron ahead next week.Clemson: The Tigers hadn’t allowed more than 16 points in any of their past six games. Yet, South Carolina put up the most points in a game against them this season. Clemson will have to shore up the secondary if it hopes to slow down Alabama and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa should it get the chance in the playoffs.UP NEXTSouth Carolina plays Akron at home next Saturday as a makeup game for one cancelled in September due to Hurricane Florence.Clemson faces No. 24 Pitt in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte, North Carolina.___More AP college football: https://apnews.com/tag/Collegefootball and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25Pete Iacobelli, The Associated Press read more

How wifi connects human brains and explains why people have gut feelings

first_imgIt explains how people often have a ‘gut feeling’ or intuition about a person or situation even if they cannot logically determine why. Humans brains are interconnected through type of ‘wi-fi’ which allows us to pick up far more information about other people than we are aware of, a leading professor claims. Prof Digby Tantam, Clinical Professor of Psychotherapy, at the University of Sheffield, believes that language plays only a part in how humans communicate and that actually the brain is working hard to pick up tiny micro-signals that communicate what a person is thinking.center_img And it may be the reason why commuters find it so difficult to maintain eye contact on a busy train. If youve got no vote youve got no voice MEP pushes election

Disclosure of property jewelry and overseas account holdings not allowed in PMGKY

first_imgThe Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Wednesday clarified that assets in overseas accounts, jewelry, stocks and immovable property cannot be declared through the government’s new tax amnesty scheme. Black money purge: Demonetisation not a cure, says AssochamUnder the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY), the CBDT said, only undisclosed income deposited in any bank or post office account can be declared by paying 50 percent of the amount in taxes and surcharges. Also, a quarter of the total sum should be parked in a non-interest bearing deposit for four years. In 2016, the government had announced its first Income Disclosure Scheme (IDS), which closed on September 30, 2016, for holders of unaccounted wealth held in cash as well as other forms such as immovable property and jewelry. Under the new income disclosure plan, a person can avail the scheme for any assessment year commencing on or before April 1, 2017. Further, deposits made in the bank account prior to the financial year 2016-17 can also be declared under the scheme. The tax department noted that a declaration under the PMGKY Scheme can be filed for deposits made in an account maintained with a specified entity by any mode such as cash, cheque, RTGS, NEFT or any electronic transfer system. The cash seized by the department and deposited in the public deposit account may be allowed to be adjusted for making payment of tax, surcharge and penalty under the scheme on the request of the person from whom the cash is seized. “However, the said amount shall not be allowed to be adjusted for making deposits under the scheme.” On the issue of a person against whom a search/survey operation has been initiated, such a person is “eligible to file the declaration under the scheme,” the CBDT said. However, no credit for advance tax paid, TDS or TCS shall be allowed under the PMGKY.last_img read more
