CVC summons WalMart India head in alleged bribery case

first_imgThe Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has summoned the India head of US-based multinational retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc in the wake of allegations that the company had paid massive amounts as bribe in India to obtain regulatory permits for some of its operations. The CVC probe will involve examination of the retailer’s documents and for the first time, the investigation agency is acting on its own based on a media report.”Some observations have been made that Wal-Mart gave some amount to government officials here. It is our duty to look into it,” PTI quoted Vigilance Commissioner TM Bhasin as sayingHe said “the Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of it and summoned country head of Wal-Mart here.””We have asked them to submit details to us by November 15,” Bhasin said.It is also for the first time that the CVC has initiated a probe against a private firm.Wal-Mart is suspected to have paid “thousands of small payments” to junior-level officials in India in order to pass its goods through customs or get real estate approvals, the Wall Street Journal had reported last month.”The vast majority of the suspicious payments were less than $200, and some were as low as $5, the people said, but when added together they totalled millions of dollars,” the report said.Wal-Mart decided to put aside its plans to foray into the Indian market in 2013 by discontinuing its joint venture with Bharti Enterprises Ltd. After that, the company opted to go alone in India.”Wal-Mart was also involved in lobbying before the US Congress in this regard,” the report said, citing Congressional disclosure reports of the past few years.last_img read more

The event is expected to give a boost to Houston area businesses. To make sure that includes minority- and women-owned companies in America’s most diverse city, Houston’s Super Bowl host committee has put together a supplier registry. On Friday, about a hundred small businesses gathered at the Buffalo Soldiers Museum in Midtown. They are some of the more than 400 women- and minority-owned businesses from Houston that were chosen for the NFL’s diversity supplier program Business Connect.Arnetta Meekins owns massage therapy spa Totally You in Bellaire. She got three minutes to pitch her services to the host committee.Meekins said one group that can benefit is the media covering the Super Bowl.“They’re trying to catch every single event, they’re sleep-deprived,” she said. “One hour of massage is like eight hours of sleep. It can give you that kind of restoration.”She said she felt good about her pitch and the committee’s response.LaMecia Butler, community relations director at Houston’s Super Bowl host committee, oversees the program.“The NFL comes into the market and they have prime contractors who help with producing the events,” she said. “The NFL strongly encourages those prime contractors to hire from the Business Connect program.”The contractors have access to a directory that lists all the companies that are part of Business Connect.Butler said pitch day gives the committee an opportunity to learn more about each company, so they can recommend them to contractors who are looking for specific services. Is Alcohol A Problem Online Tool Helps Assess Risk And Find Help

first_img Share Kristen Uroda for NPRTreatment for alcohol problems isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. The NIH has launched a treatment navigator website to connect people to resources and a wide variety of treatment options. The thinking about problem drinking and alcoholism has changed. It’s no longer considered a black-and-white, you have it or you don’t condition.“We now know that there’s a full spectrum in alcohol use disorder,” says George Koob, the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohohlism, part of the National Institutes of Health. You can have a mild, moderate or severe problem. And there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to getting help. There is a wide range of options — from residential “detox” programs to cognitive behavioral therapy, to medications such as naltrexone that can help people drink less, or acamprosate, which can help people stay dry. But many people who might need help don’t know these options exist. It’s a big obstacle to treatment.“A lot of people struggling with alcohol problems do not know where to turn,” Koob says. “Ninety percent of adults in the U.S. with an alcohol use disorder don’t get any treatment whatsoever.”That’s a lot of people, given that an estimated 17 million adults have alcohol use disorder. To help solve this problem, the NIH has launched an online Alcohol Treatment Navigator. It’s a website that helps people explore all the evidence-based options. The site is user-friendly. A list of questions helps determine the best treatment choices. A brief survey helps to determine the range or severity of a problem. The site also connects people to directories of providers. You can type in your ZIP code to find options in your community. For instance, there’s a link to a directory of licensed professional counselors, licensed clinical social workers, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists maintained by Psychology Today. There’s also a directory of treatment programs, including residential rehab and outpatient options, which is maintained by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a federal agency. The NIH does not endorse any providers, it’s simply connecting people to the options. The navigator site also has information about costs and insurance.Research suggests that most people with an alcohol problem can benefit from treatment. According to the NIAAA, about one-third of people who get treatment for an alcohol use disorder are better one year after treatment. “Many others substantially reduce their drinking and report fewer alcohol-related problems,” according to this NIAAA explainer. The new navigator site comes at a time when drinking is on the rise among women, minorities and older adults in the U.S. Dietary guidelines recommend that women should not drink more than one drink per day, and men should not exceed two drinks per day. But a recent study estimates that nearly 32 million adults in the U.S. drink at least occasionally at dangerously high levels.Copyright 2018 NPR.
