Fairbanks Couple Sentenced For Producing And Distributing Child Porn

first_imgAccording to court documents, beginning in June 2015, Davis and Germain conspired to produce visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Christopher Duane Davis, 32, of Fairbanks, was sentenced to serve 35 years in prison, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release. Charity Noel Germain, 27, of Fairbanks, was previously sentenced on Dec. 15, 2017, to serve 22 years in prison, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release. In furtherance of the conspiracy,  while babysitting  children for families in the area, Davis and Germain would sexually abuse the children and record the abuse. Davis would then share the images and videos with other pedophiles on the internet. Davis and Germain became the subject of a federal investigation after an undercover law enforcement agent working with the Australian government identified Davis’s profile on a foreign-based photo-sharing site known to host images of child pornography.center_img Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of this case. Tuesday Update Swan Lake Crews Slowly Demobilizing

first_imgFacebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Swan Lake Fire is approximately 102,027 acres in size with 72% of the planned objectives accomplished.  Fire crews continued making progress completing fire suppression objectives and no substantial growth has occurred on the fire in three days. The remaining 341 crew members on the fire are working to identify areas to stop the fire spread to the east towards Cooper Landing and secure the Sterling Highway. They are continuing to scout, monitor, and work hot spots in the area above Upper Jean Lake, where able to do so safely. The Swan Lake Fire Community Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, July 25, at 6pm, at the Cooper Landing School. Mark Struble with the Incident Command Team: “On the fire we are holding steady, there has been no real forward movement on the last for the last 60-75 hours. Most of that danger is passing so they are starting to demobilize. Some helicopters and engines are being sent to other areas of the state.” Since fire growth potential remains, given the current hot and dry weather conditions, firefighters will continue to monitor hot-spots from the air and ground while mopping-up and repairing miles of fireline.center_img Incident command staff will be on hand to provide fire information and will share the strategies and tactics being used to protect critical infrastructure throughout the community of Cooper Landing. Struble: “There will be fire officials, and local agencies there to answer questions about what is next. You look out at these blackened landscapes and what is the plan to mitigate what has happened here over the last 6 weeks with this burn.”  All interested residents are welcome to attend and ask questions about this incident and the continued efforts being made to protect the community and critical infrastructure.last_img read more

Rodale Hires President

first_imgRodale has hired former Dow Jones executive, Scott Schulman, as its president—a role left vacant since Steven Pleshette Murphy stepped down as president and CEO in 2009.Maria Rodale, who assumed Murphy’s CEO duties at the time of his departure, had stated her intention to hire both a president and COO in July.Schulman [pictured] had been at Dow Jones for 13 years, most recently as president of corporate markets, before leaving in 2012 amidst a slew of executive changes at the company. Schulman was publisher of The Wall Street Journal Online early in his tenure with Dow Jones, returning the group to profitability by introducing new revenue streams and expanding its subscription model. Todd Larsen, now EVP and group president of Time Inc.’s news and sports group, was also part of last year’s executive shakeup at Dow Jones.Maria Rodale is expected to retain an “active” role as CEO, though it will focus on “broader strategic initiatives” within the company, while Schulman will be responsible for strategy and revenue growth. The COO search has been postponed for the time being.”When I took over as CEO four years ago, I had all aspects of the business reporting directly to me,” Rodale says. “The main purpose of [Schulman’s] role is to have all the brands reporting up to him. He’s really going to be running the brands on a day-to-day basis.””We’re at a place where the company is healthy,” she adds. “I’m not as concerned with the day-to-day operating of the brands. I’m more concerned about how we prepare for the future.”Rodale named several potential revenue-drivers the company could pursue moving forward—new content verticals, e-commerce and events were among them—but says they’re just investigating them at this point. A paid content model like the one Schulman helped pioneer at The Wall Street Journal is also in play, she says. Schulman joins Rodale as the company posted a 12-percent year-over-year increase in ad pages across brands in the first half of 2013.Among its larger titles, Men’s Health (up 24.8 percent), Women’s Health (up 26.9 percent) and Runner’s World (up 14.3 percent) each saw significant growth, per PIB. Its smaller magazines, including Runner’s World (up 0.5 percent) and Bicycling (down 1.9 percent) were relatively flat however. Overall, the company says its projecting record ad revenues for 2013.”Rodale has an inspiring mission, compelling content, an impressive customer base, and multiple distribution platforms,” Schulman says in a statement. “I’m thrilled to partner with Maria and the entire Rodale family, as well as its immensely talented brand leaders, to build upon the company’s legacy and its unprecedented success of the past year.” Schulman will officially begin on Oct. 28.last_img read more

Smith Outlines Recipe for Sustaining DOD

Expect New Faces atop House Armed Services Subcommittees Next Year

first_imgThe Republican side of the House Armed Services Committee, including the leadership posts for many of its subcommittees, will undergo significant turnover in the next Congress as seven GOP members leave due to retirement, primary defeat or a decision to seek higher office. The highest profile departure is Randy Forbes (R-Va.), who lost his primary last month after switching to a neighboring district. Forbes is the third most-senior Republican on the committee and the chair of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. His departure will leave a noticeable void and prompt a battle for the chairmanship of the panel. One likely candidate to fill his subcommittee post is fellow Virginian Rob Wittman (R), who now chairs the Readiness Subcommittee, which is responsible for BRAC and other installation and real estate matters. “It’s no secret that I’ve shown interest in chairing the Seapower Subcommittee in the past,” Wittman told CQ Roll Call. “And I’d be honored to serve in that capacity in the future.”The other likely candidate to replace Forbes on the Seapower panel is Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.)If Wittman were to leave his current post to take over Seapower, one committee member who has expressed interest in assuming the Readiness slot is Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), who now leads the Oversight and Investigations panel.Joe Heck (R-Nev.), chair of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, opted to leave the House to pursue the Senate seat being vacated by Minority Leader Harry Reid (D).Other Republicans who will not be on the committee in the 115th Congress, even before the results of the Novembers elections are determined, are Jeff Miller (Fla.), John Kline (Minn.), John Fleming (La.), Chris Gibson (N.Y.) and Rich Nugent (Fla.).On the Democratic side, at least four members are departing. Loretta Sanchez (Calif.), the No. 2 Democrat after Adam Smith (Wash.) is giving up her spot to run for the Senate, as is Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), who is running to unseat Sen. Mark Kirk (R). Two other Democratic members are retiring — Mark Takai (Hawaii) and Gwen Graham (Fla.). Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

QUE DELICIOSO News On Casa Blanca Panchos Cantina

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington will soon have two Mexican restaurants as Casa Blanca is expected to open soon, following the August launch of Pancho’s Cantina. Both restaurants were recently in front of town boards with requests.Pancho’s Cantina Adds Mariachi BandPancho’s Cantina, located at 206 Ballardvale Street near Target, recently received an Entertainment License from the town. Owner and Executive Chef Fonzi Chavez came in front of the Board of Selectmen last month and explained his desire to host a mariachi band in his restaurant on its slow nights (Monday-Wednesday). The 3-4-piece group will perform as they walk around to tables and around the bar. Chavez stressed it’s nothing like a concert and there will be no ticket sales. Selectmen unanimously approved the request, contingent upon successful review of the Town’s Building Inspector, who noted that if the building’s capacity exceeds 125 during a performance, there would need to be a license crowd control management present. Chavez responded that both he and his have taken the necessary training.Casa Blanca’s Opening SoonCasa Blanca, located at the old Chili’s location in the Wilmington Crossing plaza (207 Main Street), will be opening “early next year,” according to Wilmington Health Director Shelly Newhouse.  The restaurant’s floor plans were up for review at the November Board of Health meeting. The owners have already obtained an alcohol license from the Board of Selectmen back in July, when a fall opening was suggested. Since then, however, the restaurant’s Andover location was forced to close for two months (September 19-November 16) due to the Merrimack Valley gas explosions. Wilmington Apple will report on the restaurant’s opening date once it’s officially announced.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 4 Wilmington Students Named To Deans List At WPI

first_imgWORCESTER, MA — The following local residents were among 1,598 students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2019 semester:Zachary Abbott is a member of the class of 2019 majoring in civil engineering.Michael Gake is a member of the class of 2020 majoring in industrial engineering and professional writing.David Robie is a member of the class of 2021 majoring in aerospace engineering.Bridget Sullivan is a member of the class of 2020 majoring in mechanical engineering. The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A-level in courses and projects.“WPI’s academic programs are rigorous and require a level of independence beyond what is required in traditional courses. WPI students go beyond the classroom to work on open-ended problems in and for communities around the world. The problems are important and the impact is real,” said dean of undergraduate studies Arthur C. Heinricher. “Some of this nation’s best and brightest students come to WPI to study engineering and science and business and the humanities. Those named to the Dean’s List have excelled in all of their work, and we are exceptionally proud of these outstanding students.”About Worcester Polytechnic InstituteWPI, a global leader in project-based learning, is a distinctive, top-tier technological university founded in 1865 on the principle that students learn most effectively by applying the theory learned in the classroom to the practice of solving real-world problems. Recognized by the National Academy of Engineering with the 2016 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education, WPI’s pioneering project-based curriculum engages undergraduates in solving important scientific, technological, and societal problems throughout their education and at more than 50 project centers around the world. WPI offers more than 50 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs across 14 academic departments in science, engineering, technology, business, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts. Its faculty and students pursue groundbreaking research to meet ongoing challenges in health and biotechnology; robotics and the internet of things; advanced materials and manufacturing; cyber, data, and security systems; learning science; and more.(NOTE: The above announcement is from WPI via Merit.)Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. News Notes From WCTV Did You Know WCTV Has A Podcast Studio

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Community Television has seen a Podcast explosion in 2019. Have you noticed?Let me start with the quick explanation on podcasting. Podcasts are like radio, but you listen to it on-demand. They are typically a series with a common theme. You can listen to WCTV podcasts through the WCTV App, Soundclound and through the Apple Podcast App. Just search for WCTV. We also list them on our website at wctv.org/programs.WCTV currently has nine podcast series being produced inside our podcast studio. Two of those are driven by WCTV staff. But the other seven come from residents who are interested in sharing their stories, their insights and their interests. If you’re new to podcasting, or very familiar with the platform, I invite you to check out these series from Wilmington producers. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen this sort of widespread creativity in our studio.“Namaste with Renee” is the newest series. Renee Marcou has been spending hours in the studio over the past month putting together her program, which talks a lot about finding your inner peace.“Quick Health Concepts” with Dr. Leslee Quick is all about healthy living. Her first two podcasts talked about cannabis and its applications in health, with specific mentions of CBD and how it’s different than marijuana.“Fresh Perspectives” from Caroline Buckley is produced in partnership with the Substance Abuse Coalition and deals specifically with substance use and recovery.“Minding Your Business” with Amy LaMarche invites local business owners to come in and talk about their industry and offer tips for potential customers. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s all about educating the consumer.“TaP: Teens and Parents” features the mother-son combo of Erica and Connor Marchant. This series delves into issues that families face. The most recent episode was all about social media use and the internet in general.“Mark’s Musings” is one of our longest-running podcasts from producer Mark Ryan. Mark interviews authors in a very conversational setting.“Now This With the North Nurse” is on summer break. But these short clips from Jane Ferrara and Heather Peachey deal with healthy concepts at school. Usually complete with sound effects!“How To Make a Memory” isn’t produced in our studio. But we wouldn’t feel right leaving Jen Tierney’s podcast off this list. Her Wilmington-based series is all about making memories with the ones you love.I mentioned at the beginning that we also have a pair of staff-produced podcasts. At the top of the list is Bridging the Digital Divide, WCTV’s award-winning podcast produced by staff member Lisa Kapala and Brad McKenna from the Wilmington Memorial Library. If you often feel like technology is leaving you behind, this series will get you caught up. We also do a monthly “Member Spotlight” featuring one of our WCTV members.Do you want to join the list of Wilmington podcasters? WCTV will train you on the equipment and host your series on our account. Contact Lisa Kapala at lisa@wctv.org to learn more. If nothing else, please check out an episode. You might be surprised at what you hear.(NOTE: The above announcement was submitted by WCTV Executive Director Shaun Neville.)Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. Google Chromes Canvas app lets you unleash your artistic ability

first_img Lenovo Smart Clock: $59.99 (save $20) $90 at Daily Steals via Google Express Comments Post a comment Lenovo 130-15AST 15.6-inch laptop: $210 (save $90) Use promo code 19LABOR10 to get an unusually good deal on JBL’s interesting hybrid product — not quite headphones, and not quite a traditional speaker, but something you wear like neckphones to listen to music on the go. Though not technically a Labor Day sale, it’s happening during Labor Day sale season — and it’s too good not to share. Nationwide Distributors, via Google Express, has just about the best AirPods deal we’ve seen (when you apply promo code ZBEDWZ at checkout). This is for the second-gen AirPods with the wireless charging case. Can’t imagine these will last long at this price, so if you’re interested, act fast. HP Laptop 15t Value: $520 (save $780) I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. Watch the Porsche Taycan sprint to 124 mph 26 times in a

first_imgGetting to test the upcoming Porsche Taycan EV ahead of anyone else is pretty awesome. But what could make it even cooler? Being given the chance to beat the ever-loving heck out of the thing… for science.Jonny Smith of The Fully Charged Show on YouTube was recently given the chance to test the Porsche Taycan’s launch-control repeatability. For the test, Smith smashed the accelerator and sent Porsche’s first all-electric car to 124 miles per hour more than two dozen times. Despite the abuse, the time difference between the fastest and slowest runs was only 0.8 seconds.Porsche owes the Taycan’s repeat-launch-control ability to a few factors. The automaker points to the two permanent-magnet electric motors at each axle, which have a unique kind of assembly that allows more copper in each stator, improving output while simultaneously providing for more efficient cooling. Porsche also noted the thermal management system, which was built specifically for the Taycan to ensure this kind of repeatability. Enlarge ImageThat’s a lot o’ hustle. Porsche It goes without saying that Smith inevitably compares the Taycan’s capabilities to that of Ludicrous Mode in Tesla’s most powerful electrics. While the US automaker’s cars offer up warnings about repeated use of its brutal acceleration setting, the Taycan offers no such thing. It’s not nearly as quick as Tesla’s cars, but the repetition makes up for it.Since the car has yet to make its debut, which is set to change in a matter of weeks, Smith wasn’t able to show us anything about the car’s interior. The camera angles are all tight, hiding the dashboard, while a windshield-mounted camera shows Smith sitting on a seat that’s clearly been deliberately covered to hide its details. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see the whole thing, but it’s good to know that it can perform as a Porsche should. Worlds first Chromebook Enterprise from Dell took close to 2 years to

first_imgDell Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise. Sarah Tew/CNET Chromebooks — laptops that run on Google’s Chrome OS — are a growing part of the global PC market. The devices have consumed a large part of the education market in the past few years and have steadily pushed into the business world. Dell announced Monday the world’s first Chromebook Enterprise two-in-one and laptop to help solidify Chrome OS’ business presence. The two devices are designed to satisfy the IT execs faced with a new world that demands choice, said Brett Hansen, VP of Dell client software and general manager data security. “They want to be able to choose environments that make the most sense for either my organization, my department or even an individual.” Within that construct, Dell started conversations with Google about Chrome.Google had been talking with many businesses that wanted their workforce both using the cloud and a modern operating system, said Eve Phillips, Google’s group product manager for Chrome OS Commercial. “Things get lost, they’re not secure, real laptops get left places, for all of these reasons — for end users and IT — there are tons of benefits” for moving to a cloud-based OS.”At the same time,” Phillips added, “organizations also want to take advantage of what the cloud offers without throwing away everything they’ve got.”04-dell-latitude-5300-2-in-1-chromebook-enterpriseDell Latitude 5300 two-in-one Chromebook Enterprise. Sarah Tew/CNET Chromebook Enterprise aims to solve this from a software perspective with both Chrome OS and the enterprise features it enables, as well as combining it with the hardware, support and sale infrastructure from Dell. “It’s bringing all of the pieces together that organizations have grown to expect along with the modern OS of Chrome devices,” Phillips said.Dell and Google have been working on the extensive joint effort for close to two years. “To really get the benefits of both companies, there were things we had to do differently,” Phillips said. Those included integrating the security of verified boot and Google’s boot security chip into the hardware as well as enabling all of Dell’s support infrastructure.03-dell-latitude-5400-chromebook-enterprise Sarah Tew/CNET For Dell’s part, in addition to its hardware and support, the company is making broader adoption easier. “Right out of the gate we’re going to sell this in 50 countries and we’ll have 10 different keyboard languages,” Hansen said. And then there are the two devices themselves — a traditional clamshell and a two-in-one — which are designed as mainstream devices developed for a larger workforce.Built for durability, they’re made from carbon fiber and can be easily serviced by an IT department. They’re also highly configurable with everything from a Celeron up to eighth-generation Intel Core processors, up to 32GB of DDR4 memory and enterprise-class PCIe NVMe SSD drives up to 1TB. The 14-inch Latitude 5400’s battery can last up to 20 hours, while the 13-inch Latitude 5300 two-in-one can go for up to 14 hours, depending on configuration and tasks.Other benefits include unified endpoint management with VMware’s Workspace One, a revamped Google Admin panel with significantly faster load times and the option to enable managed Linux environments on Chromebooks. The Latitude 5400 price will start at $699 and the Latitude 5300 starts at $819. However, no credit for advance tax paid, TDS or TCS shall be allowed under the PMGKY.last_img read more

Australia readies for new PM

first_imgAustralia`s prime minister Malcolm Turnbull attends a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra on 23 August, 2018. Photo: AFPAustralia was readying for a new prime minister Friday after a revolt against Malcolm Turnbull by hardline conservatives in his Liberal party, with the former banker’s near three-year reign all but over.Former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, an ex-police officer and right-winger, has been the driving force behind the move to unseat Turnbull after a party backlash against his more moderate approach to politics.Turnbull survived one attempt to knife him on Tuesday, winning a party room vote 48-35, but since then ministers have been defecting.Dutton needed to prove he had majority backing, or 43 signatures from within the party’s parliamentary group — a requirement for him to force a second crack at the top job ahead of national elections due by mid-2019.Turnbull confirmed he had received a petition showing this support.”I have just been provided with a request for a meeting of the Parliamentary Liberal Party. It has 43 signatures,” he tweeted. The party whip was personally phoning everyone on the list to make sure they had signed, broadcaster ABC reported.Turnbull said as soon as the names were confirmed, a meeting to decide the leadership would be called. The PM, who accused Dutton and his supporters of bullying and intimidation, on Thursday said he would not contest again and would leave parliament, although he did not set out a timetable. His departure from politics would spark a by-election for his Sydney seat, threatening the government’s one-seat parliamentary majority.Despite Dutton getting the numbers for a challenge, there is no guarantee he will assume the top job, with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Treasurer Scott Morrison — both Turnbull allies — also in the running.During a three-way vote, whoever comes last in the first round will be eliminated with a second round taking place to decide who becomes leader.Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne, a Turnbull ally, refused to say who he would be backing and hit out at disruptive elements inside his party.”I think some people should have considered the greater good of the people of Australia, and the government, rather than their own self-interest and ambition,” he said.- Owe you an apology -The unrest is the latest chapter in a turbulent decade for Australian politics, with no leader managing to serve out a full term since former Prime Minister John Howard lost the 2007 election. If a new prime minister takes office Friday, it will be the seventh in 11 years in a remarkable revolving door at Canberra’s parliament house.Complicating matters, Dutton was referred to the solicitor-general over his eligibility to sit in parliament due to family financial interests in childcare centres that receive government subsidies — a possible breach of constitutional rules. The nation’s top lawyer Friday cleared him to continue in parliament. If he succeeds in taking the top job, Dutton will push Australian politics further to the right with a shift in several policies. He has made clear already that he would slash the migrant intake to counter population pressures and has not ruled out withdrawing Australia from the Paris climate agreement. The move to oust Turnbull was sparked by his plans on Monday to embed carbon emissions targets in law.Coupled with the government long trailing the opposition Labor party in opinion polls, the move sparked a revolt that quickly spiralled into calls for his head. One minister was so disillusioned with the push to oust Turnbull that he took to Twitter to apologise to the Australian people.”Australia. We owe you an apology. I’m sorry. You deserve better than many of the things our Federal Parliament has served up to you for the past 10 years,” wrote Nationals MP Darren Chester, whose party is in a coalition with the Liberals.last_img
