Education Management Information System Being Developed

first_imgMinister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says an Education Management Information System (EMIS) is being developed that will provide a more detailed, data-driven profile of students. He said that the EMIS will be supported by information from the National Student Registration System (NSRS) implemented in 2010 to capture biographical and other data on all students entering grade one.Minister Reid said that with the EMIS, “you will now have an information management system and biodata on students, which will also dovetail into the Child Health and Development Passport, because what we really need is to know very early, the status of the students”.“The same way you have immunisation data to know how healthy the child is, you also want to know how ready they are for the education system and if they have special needs,” he added.Minister Reid was speaking with JIS News at a Regional Data Security Conference held on September 13 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston. He explained that EMIS will provide a complete profile of the child as soon as they enter the education system.“For example, do they need special support? Information like that will enable us to track them, intervene and give special support where necessary, so a child that has physical disability, the data will tell you about that child and inform of which school to place them,” he told JIS News.“We are going to collect more detailed information, so that the system develops a profile of the student, not just to say that you are registered but enable better planning and management within the system,” he added.Held under the theme ‘Your Data Your Rights; What Individuals and Companies Should Know’, the Regional Data Security Conference was organised by the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Jamaica in association with one of its member companies, e-Biz Pro Train.last_img read more

Enbridge shares fall after Minnesota judge issues Line 3 recommendation

first_imgIt says utilizing the existing route would mean physically removing the old pipe and replacing it, a process that would require Enbridge to stop oil shipments for about 16 months, effectively removing 390,000 barrels per day of crude oil takeaway capacity. The existing route crosses two Ojibwe Native American reservations where tribal governments have voiced opposition to replacing the line, setting up the potential for future disputes, Desjardins says.Judge Ann O’Reilly wrote that Enbridge has established that the project is needed, but that the negative consequences to Minnesota of the company’s more southerly preferred route outweigh the benefits. The cost-benefit analysis shifts in favour of approving the project if Enbridge builds the pipeline in Line 3’s existing trench, she said.O’Reilly’s recommendations aren’t binding on the commission, but they’re the product of an extensive public hearing and comment process.Commission Chair Nancy Lange acknowledged at a hearing last month that whatever the commission decides, the dispute is likely to end up in court.Enbridge said in a statement that it was pleased the judge listened to the extensive evidence for the need for the project, and will be taking time to review the recommendation that it use the existing right-of-way. CALGARY, A.B. – Shares in Enbridge Inc. were trading down nearly five per cent the day after a judge in Minnesota recommended that its Line 3 pipeline replacement project follow its existing route across the state rather than the company’s preferred route.Enbridge traded as low as $37.86, off $1.96, on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning. In an overnight note, analysts at Desjardins Capital Markets say the administrative law judge’s report could mean delays for the project if the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission adopts her recommendation. A vote is expected in June.last_img read more

Theres An 85 Percent Chance The Cubs Wont Win The World Series

That means there’s still an 85 percent chance that the Cubs won’t win it all. There are plenty of difference-making free agents that could help shift the odds back toward Chicago’s rivals before opening day, and the team still plays in the NL’s toughest division (it may be comforting for Cubs fans to know that according to SRS, the NL Central is still weaker than every AL division — or it may not). But for now, the Cubs are MLB’s best team — on paper, at least. It’s been a good week for the Chicago Cubs. On Tuesday, they swooped into the bidding on coveted second baseman Ben Zobrist and inked him to a four-year, $56 million deal. Then on Friday, news came that the Cubs had also agreed to an eight-year, $184 million contract with outfielder Jason Heyward, likely the best player on the free-agent market this winter. In conjunction with Chicago’s existing stable of young talent, the additions of Heyward and Zobrist have at least one well-known algorithm projecting them to be the best team in baseball next season. It wasn’t long ago that we wrote enthusiastically about the Cubs’ chances to snap their 108-year championship drought, only to see them swept in the NLCS. We don’t (completely) want to put the stink on them again, so we’ll be brief. FanGraphs’ depth charts call for Chicago’s roster to produce a collective 52.6 wins above replacement (WAR) in 2016. After adjusting things so that all of MLB has 2,430 total wins,181 wins per team for 30 teams. that roughly works out to a true-talent projection of 99 wins for the Cubs — a ridiculously high number. What does it mean for Chicago’s chances of breaking The Curse? According to the relationship between talent forecasts and World Series odds, which FiveThirtyEight editor-in-chief Nate Silver and I researched for a trade-deadline article earlier this year, a team with 99-win talent will win a championship about 15 percent of the time: read more

Football Ryan Day views himself as placeholder in Meyers absence

Ohio State acting head coach Ryan Day addresses the media on Aug. 27 prior to the first game of the season against Oregon State. Credit: Amal Saeed | Assistant Photo EditorIn his first press conference as Ohio State’s acting head coach, Ryan Day wanted to talk about football. Day began by saying he was not a part of the investigation of head coach Urban Meyer: he was not interviewed and he had nothing to add. “Today I would like to talk about football and this team,” Day said. “Out of respect for everybody involved, I’m not going to speak today on the independent investigation, the report, or any speculation regarding it.”As Day takes over as acting head coach for the first three games of the 2018 season and Meyer serves his three-game suspension, the repercussions of his absence still loomed as the season opener neared. Even though he did not want to talk about the investigation, Day made clear he was not there to replace Meyer. He said his role in the first three games of the season will be to to empower the coaching staff and his players and just keep the program up and running. Day has taken on increased responsibility, not only tasked with becoming acting head coach, but guiding redshirt sophomore Dwayne Haskins during his first snaps as the starter as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. “There’s been times where I felt like I’ve been drinking through a fire hose, to be honest,” Day said. “The expectation of Ohio State is you win every game and I understand that. So there’s that added pressure there that you feel.”As he addressed Ohio State as interim head coach, Day used the phrase “win the moment” to define the transition he has gone through. Instead of focusing on the future and what was to come, Day got his players to focus on the present, encouraging them to use their energy on the moment. That is exactly the focus Day has on his first career game as a head coach. “I’ve been trying to focus on today, and then tomorrow we’ll focus on tomorrow and then we just go from there,” Day said. “Because there is no script, so we’ve just been working forward.” When Meyer was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 1, Day was contacted by athletic director Gene Smith, telling him he was going to be the acting head coach at Ohio State until the investigation and subsequent punishment was complete. Even with two former head coaches on Meyer’s coaching staff in defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, the message Day received from Smith after he was hired was to trust his instincts. Day had never been a head coach before. Prior to being hired as a quarterbacks coach and, eventually, promoted to offensive coordinator at Ohio State, he was a quarterbacks coach with both the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. During this time of adjustment, he leaned on one of the former coaches that mean the most to him. “I got a text message and I get it just about every other day from one of my mentors, Chip Kelly, and he says, ‘you’re built for this,’” Day said. “That’s what he told me. And that’s the thing I keep going to every morning when I wake up, is that I’m built for this.”As a head coach, Day said he has to watch the game a bit differently, noticing the whole picture as opposed to just the quarterbacks or the offense as a whole. He said his perspective has widened over the past month by watching players on and off the field, their attitude and mentality as they go through each aspect of a specific practice. Being on staff with him for one season, Schiano, as a defensive coordinator, said he has not directly seen the work Day has done on the field. But, in Day’s time as head coach, Schiano said he’s very impressed. “I mean, he’s got the ‘it,’” Schiano said. “When you work on the other side of the ball, you really don’t get to sit in the room with him very much and game plan and do all that stuff. So our relationship was more friends than professional, we don’t do a lot together professionally. Observing him over the last whatever it is, 25 days, he’s got the ‘it.’” Day said he does not think Ohio State has missed a beat since Meyer was placed on administrative leave. He said that is due to the culture of the team, the leadership and example that the newly named captains have shown through preseason camp. That was his goal all along. When he runs onto the field on Sept. 1, in front of his Ohio State team, Day said he will not view it as his head coaching debut. Yes, his family will be in attendance, but he views himself as just a placeholder until Meyer returns. “This isn’t one of those things where I’m becoming the head coach,” Day said. “This is just something that I’m holding the place for coach until he gets back and the goal is to win the game against Oregon State.” read more

Fairbanks Couple Sentenced For Producing And Distributing Child Porn

first_imgAccording to court documents, beginning in June 2015, Davis and Germain conspired to produce visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Tuesday Update Swan Lake Crews Slowly Demobilizing

first_imgFacebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Swan Lake Fire is approximately 102,027 acres in size with 72% of the planned objectives accomplished.  Fire crews continued making progress completing fire suppression objectives and no substantial growth has occurred on the fire in three days. The remaining 341 crew members on the fire are working to identify areas to stop the fire spread to the east towards Cooper Landing and secure the Sterling Highway. They are continuing to scout, monitor, and work hot spots in the area above Upper Jean Lake, where able to do so safely. The Swan Lake Fire Community Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, July 25, at 6pm, at the Cooper Landing School. Mark Struble with the Incident Command Team: “On the fire we are holding steady, there has been no real forward movement on the last for the last 60-75 hours. Most of that danger is passing so they are starting to demobilize. Some helicopters and engines are being sent to other areas of the state.” Since fire growth potential remains, given the current hot and dry weather conditions, firefighters will continue to monitor hot-spots from the air and ground while mopping-up and repairing miles of fireline.center_img Incident command staff will be on hand to provide fire information and will share the strategies and tactics being used to protect critical infrastructure throughout the community of Cooper Landing. Struble: “There will be fire officials, and local agencies there to answer questions about what is next. You look out at these blackened landscapes and what is the plan to mitigate what has happened here over the last 6 weeks with this burn.”  All interested residents are welcome to attend and ask questions about this incident and the continued efforts being made to protect the community and critical infrastructure.last_img read more

Rodale Hires President

first_imgRodale has hired former Dow Jones executive, Scott Schulman, as its president—a role left vacant since Steven Pleshette Murphy stepped down as president and CEO in 2009.Maria Rodale, who assumed Murphy’s CEO duties at the time of his departure, had stated her intention to hire both a president and COO in July.Schulman [pictured] had been at Dow Jones for 13 years, most recently as president of corporate markets, before leaving in 2012 amidst a slew of executive changes at the company. Schulman was publisher of The Wall Street Journal Online early in his tenure with Dow Jones, returning the group to profitability by introducing new revenue streams and expanding its subscription model. Todd Larsen, now EVP and group president of Time Inc.’s news and sports group, was also part of last year’s executive shakeup at Dow Jones.Maria Rodale is expected to retain an “active” role as CEO, though it will focus on “broader strategic initiatives” within the company, while Schulman will be responsible for strategy and revenue growth. The COO search has been postponed for the time being.”When I took over as CEO four years ago, I had all aspects of the business reporting directly to me,” Rodale says. “The main purpose of [Schulman’s] role is to have all the brands reporting up to him. He’s really going to be running the brands on a day-to-day basis.””We’re at a place where the company is healthy,” she adds. “I’m not as concerned with the day-to-day operating of the brands. I’m more concerned about how we prepare for the future.”Rodale named several potential revenue-drivers the company could pursue moving forward—new content verticals, e-commerce and events were among them—but says they’re just investigating them at this point. A paid content model like the one Schulman helped pioneer at The Wall Street Journal is also in play, she says. Schulman joins Rodale as the company posted a 12-percent year-over-year increase in ad pages across brands in the first half of 2013.Among its larger titles, Men’s Health (up 24.8 percent), Women’s Health (up 26.9 percent) and Runner’s World (up 14.3 percent) each saw significant growth, per PIB. Its smaller magazines, including Runner’s World (up 0.5 percent) and Bicycling (down 1.9 percent) were relatively flat however. Overall, the company says its projecting record ad revenues for 2013.”Rodale has an inspiring mission, compelling content, an impressive customer base, and multiple distribution platforms,” Schulman says in a statement. “I’m thrilled to partner with Maria and the entire Rodale family, as well as its immensely talented brand leaders, to build upon the company’s legacy and its unprecedented success of the past year.” Schulman will officially begin on Oct. 28.last_img read more

Smith Outlines Recipe for Sustaining DOD

Expect New Faces atop House Armed Services Subcommittees Next Year

first_imgThe Republican side of the House Armed Services Committee, including the leadership posts for many of its subcommittees, will undergo significant turnover in the next Congress as seven GOP members leave due to retirement, primary defeat or a decision to seek higher office. The highest profile departure is Randy Forbes (R-Va.), who lost his primary last month after switching to a neighboring district. Forbes is the third most-senior Republican on the committee and the chair of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. His departure will leave a noticeable void and prompt a battle for the chairmanship of the panel. One likely candidate to fill his subcommittee post is fellow Virginian Rob Wittman (R), who now chairs the Readiness Subcommittee, which is responsible for BRAC and other installation and real estate matters. “It’s no secret that I’ve shown interest in chairing the Seapower Subcommittee in the past,” Wittman told CQ Roll Call. “And I’d be honored to serve in that capacity in the future.”The other likely candidate to replace Forbes on the Seapower panel is Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.)If Wittman were to leave his current post to take over Seapower, one committee member who has expressed interest in assuming the Readiness slot is Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), who now leads the Oversight and Investigations panel.Joe Heck (R-Nev.), chair of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, opted to leave the House to pursue the Senate seat being vacated by Minority Leader Harry Reid (D).Other Republicans who will not be on the committee in the 115th Congress, even before the results of the Novembers elections are determined, are Jeff Miller (Fla.), John Kline (Minn.), John Fleming (La.), Chris Gibson (N.Y.) and Rich Nugent (Fla.).On the Democratic side, at least four members are departing. Loretta Sanchez (Calif.), the No. 2 Democrat after Adam Smith (Wash.) is giving up her spot to run for the Senate, as is Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), who is running to unseat Sen. Mark Kirk (R). QUE DELICIOSO News On Casa Blanca Panchos Cantina

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington will soon have two Mexican restaurants as Casa Blanca is expected to open soon, following the August launch of Pancho’s Cantina. Both restaurants were recently in front of town boards with requests.Pancho’s Cantina Adds Mariachi BandPancho’s Cantina, located at 206 Ballardvale Street near Target, recently received an Entertainment License from the town. Owner and Executive Chef Fonzi Chavez came in front of the Board of Selectmen last month and explained his desire to host a mariachi band in his restaurant on its slow nights (Monday-Wednesday). The 3-4-piece group will perform as they walk around to tables and around the bar. Chavez stressed it’s nothing like a concert and there will be no ticket sales. Selectmen unanimously approved the request, contingent upon successful review of the Town’s Building Inspector, who noted that if the building’s capacity exceeds 125 during a performance, there would need to be a license crowd control management present. Chavez responded that both he and his have taken the necessary training.Casa Blanca’s Opening SoonCasa Blanca, located at the old Chili’s location in the Wilmington Crossing plaza (207 Main Street), will be opening “early next year,” according to Wilmington Health Director Shelly Newhouse.  The restaurant’s floor plans were up for review at the November Board of Health meeting. The owners have already obtained an alcohol license from the Board of Selectmen back in July, when a fall opening was suggested. Since then, however, the restaurant’s Andover location was forced to close for two months (September 19-November 16) due to the Merrimack Valley gas explosions. Wilmington Apple will report on the restaurant’s opening date once it’s officially announced.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. The most recent episode was all about social media use and the internet in general.“Mark’s Musings” is one of our longest-running podcasts from producer Mark Ryan. Mark interviews authors in a very conversational setting.“Now This With the North Nurse” is on summer break. But these short clips from Jane Ferrara and Heather Peachey deal with healthy concepts at school. Usually complete with sound effects!“How To Make a Memory” isn’t produced in our studio. But we wouldn’t feel right leaving Jen Tierney’s podcast off this list. Her Wilmington-based series is all about making memories with the ones you love.I mentioned at the beginning that we also have a pair of staff-produced podcasts. At the top of the list is Bridging the Digital Divide, WCTV’s award-winning podcast produced by staff member Lisa Kapala and Brad McKenna from the Wilmington Memorial Library. If you often feel like technology is leaving you behind, this series will get you caught up. We also do a monthly “Member Spotlight” featuring one of our WCTV members.Do you want to join the list of Wilmington podcasters? WCTV will train you on the equipment and host your series on our account. Contact Lisa Kapala at lisa@wctv.org to learn more. If nothing else, please check out an episode. Google Chromes Canvas app lets you unleash your artistic ability

first_img Lenovo Smart Clock: $59.99 (save $20) $90 at Daily Steals via Google Express Comments Post a comment Lenovo 130-15AST 15.6-inch laptop: $210 (save $90) Use promo code 19LABOR10 to get an unusually good deal on JBL’s interesting hybrid product — not quite headphones, and not quite a traditional speaker, but something you wear like neckphones to listen to music on the go. Though not technically a Labor Day sale, it’s happening during Labor Day sale season — and it’s too good not to share. Nationwide Distributors, via Google Express, has just about the best AirPods deal we’ve seen (when you apply promo code ZBEDWZ at checkout). This is for the second-gen AirPods with the wireless charging case. Can’t imagine these will last long at this price, so if you’re interested, act fast. HP Laptop 15t Value: $520 (save $780) I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Watch the Porsche Taycan sprint to 124 mph 26 times in a

first_imgGetting to test the upcoming Porsche Taycan EV ahead of anyone else is pretty awesome. But what could make it even cooler? Being given the chance to beat the ever-loving heck out of the thing… for science.Jonny Smith of The Fully Charged Show on YouTube was recently given the chance to test the Porsche Taycan’s launch-control repeatability. For the test, Smith smashed the accelerator and sent Porsche’s first all-electric car to 124 miles per hour more than two dozen times. Despite the abuse, the time difference between the fastest and slowest runs was only 0.8 seconds.Porsche owes the Taycan’s repeat-launch-control ability to a few factors. The automaker points to the two permanent-magnet electric motors at each axle, which have a unique kind of assembly that allows more copper in each stator, improving output while simultaneously providing for more efficient cooling. Porsche also noted the thermal management system, which was built specifically for the Taycan to ensure this kind of repeatability. Enlarge ImageThat’s a lot o’ hustle. Porsche It goes without saying that Smith inevitably compares the Taycan’s capabilities to that of Ludicrous Mode in Tesla’s most powerful electrics. While the US automaker’s cars offer up warnings about repeated use of its brutal acceleration setting, the Taycan offers no such thing. It’s not nearly as quick as Tesla’s cars, but the repetition makes up for it.Since the car has yet to make its debut, which is set to change in a matter of weeks, Smith wasn’t able to show us anything about the car’s interior. The camera angles are all tight, hiding the dashboard, while a windshield-mounted camera shows Smith sitting on a seat that’s clearly been deliberately covered to hide its details. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see the whole thing, but it’s good to know that it can perform as a Porsche should.
