Fairbanks Couple Sentenced For Producing And Distributing Child Porn

first_imgAccording to court documents, beginning in June 2015, Davis and Germain conspired to produce visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Christopher Duane Davis, 32, of Fairbanks, was sentenced to serve 35 years in prison, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release. Charity Noel Germain, 27, of Fairbanks, was previously sentenced on Dec. 15, 2017, to serve 22 years in prison, followed by a lifetime term of supervised release. In furtherance of the conspiracy,  while babysitting  children for families in the area, Davis and Germain would sexually abuse the children and record the abuse. Davis would then share the images and videos with other pedophiles on the internet. Davis and Germain became the subject of a federal investigation after an undercover law enforcement agent working with the Australian government identified Davis’s profile on a foreign-based photo-sharing site known to host images of child pornography.center_img Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of this case. Tuesday Update Swan Lake Crews Slowly Demobilizing

first_imgFacebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Swan Lake Fire is approximately 102,027 acres in size with 72% of the planned objectives accomplished.  Fire crews continued making progress completing fire suppression objectives and no substantial growth has occurred on the fire in three days. The remaining 341 crew members on the fire are working to identify areas to stop the fire spread to the east towards Cooper Landing and secure the Sterling Highway. They are continuing to scout, monitor, and work hot spots in the area above Upper Jean Lake, where able to do so safely. The Swan Lake Fire Community Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, July 25, at 6pm, at the Cooper Landing School. Mark Struble with the Incident Command Team: “On the fire we are holding steady, there has been no real forward movement on the last for the last 60-75 hours. Most of that danger is passing so they are starting to demobilize. Some helicopters and engines are being sent to other areas of the state.” Since fire growth potential remains, given the current hot and dry weather conditions, firefighters will continue to monitor hot-spots from the air and ground while mopping-up and repairing miles of fireline.center_img Incident command staff will be on hand to provide fire information and will share the strategies and tactics being used to protect critical infrastructure throughout the community of Cooper Landing. Struble: “There will be fire officials, and local agencies there to answer questions about what is next. You look out at these blackened landscapes and what is the plan to mitigate what has happened here over the last 6 weeks with this burn.”  All interested residents are welcome to attend and ask questions about this incident and the continued efforts being made to protect the community and critical infrastructure.last_img read more

Times 100 Most Influential Hacked

first_imgIn addition to voting moot to the top of the list, the hackers apparently rearranged the top 21 names so that the first letter of their names—looking down the list—spelled out the phrase “Marblecake Also the Game.” The online poll closes April 28, the spokesperson said. Even Time.com isn’t immune to hackers. The magazine’s annual online poll of the top 100 most influential people in government, science, technology and the arts has been flooded with fake votes by followers of 4chan, an online message board.Taking advantage of an apparent lack of authentication or validation of the online process, hackers used “autovoters” to inundate the Time poll with millions of votes for “moot,” a pseudonym of Christopher Poole, operator of 4chan. Voting went live March 19.“We took many preventative measures to maintain the integrity of the Time 100 poll on Time.com, and moot has a passionate community of users who worked to influence the poll,” a Time spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO:.Time editors traditionally include the person with the most votes online in the magazine’s official list, which is to appear in the May 1 issue.last_img read more

Daimler gets goahead for open road tests of selfdriving truck

first_imgClose Nevada has given Daimler AG, the worlds biggest truck maker, the go-ahead to test its self-driving heavy freight truck for the first time on the open road in ordinary traffic, the two sides announced on Tuesday (6 May).Daimler has previously shown off its prototype autonomous truck in Europe on a closed section of German autobahn. The truck maker says self-driving, or autonomous, trucks will help freight companies save money on fuel and increase safety on the roads. In order for Daimler to get the nod from Nevada, the truck, which will be under its Freightliner brand, underwent 10,000 miles of testing. The vehicle will now undergo testing under real road conditions.Daimler, which with its Mercedes brand has been at the forefront of German efforts to counter Googles advances in driverless cars, says it sees at least as much potential for automation in freight transportation.Daimler is also not alone in pushing automation technology for heavy-duty trucks. Swedens Scania, a unit of Volkswagen, is among peers working on platooning technology that allows several trucks to travel in tight convoy with a sole human driver in the lead vehicle.Daimler has previously said its truck model still requires human oversight while freeing the driver to perform back-office tasks such as handling bookings and billing, or planning future itineraries.last_img read more

Sazal Jain has all the quality to become and successful Music Producer

first_imgMusic production is not an easy job. Although the technology involved in music production has dramatically changed over the years, creative work has remained unchanged. To be successful, you must have music production skills.Sazal Jain, who is known for helping music artist, has decided to start his production house in a short time. But will it be easy to start a big production house in a day, well atlist we can say the relations which Sazal has developed nothing is impossible for him? But can he do good things with his production house? Why it is commanding because only love for music can not help you grow in this field. He has to deal with individuals from the record label, artists, and probably prima donnas.Sazal has to go through the details because one bad day can spoil everything, and that is the difference between producing a hit and flop song. It will be a daunting task for Sazal; he might need the people of this field who can help him in crucial situations.Sazal has to learn one more thing, and that is patience. If he remains calm and relaxed in every situation, then he will not face significant issues while producing albums. Then he has to be respectful to the people who are working with him because a good team can do wonders for the production house. After all, it is a teamwork. We feel Sazal Jain can come over the above problems because he is a capable person and very energetic with good relations with top names. All these things will help him progress faster than an ordinary production house. So we are confident if he starts his production house, he will get success for sure. Here’s wishing Haryana’s Icon Sazal Jain all the best for his future ventures. We hope it does more good things for penniless souls and artist.IBT does not endorse any of the above content.last_img read more

Australia readies for new PM

first_imgAustralia`s prime minister Malcolm Turnbull attends a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra on 23 August, 2018. Photo: AFPAustralia was readying for a new prime minister Friday after a revolt against Malcolm Turnbull by hardline conservatives in his Liberal party, with the former banker’s near three-year reign all but over.Former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, an ex-police officer and right-winger, has been the driving force behind the move to unseat Turnbull after a party backlash against his more moderate approach to politics.Turnbull survived one attempt to knife him on Tuesday, winning a party room vote 48-35, but since then ministers have been defecting.Dutton needed to prove he had majority backing, or 43 signatures from within the party’s parliamentary group — a requirement for him to force a second crack at the top job ahead of national elections due by mid-2019.Turnbull confirmed he had received a petition showing this support.”I have just been provided with a request for a meeting of the Parliamentary Liberal Party. It has 43 signatures,” he tweeted. The party whip was personally phoning everyone on the list to make sure they had signed, broadcaster ABC reported.Turnbull said as soon as the names were confirmed, a meeting to decide the leadership would be called. The PM, who accused Dutton and his supporters of bullying and intimidation, on Thursday said he would not contest again and would leave parliament, although he did not set out a timetable. His departure from politics would spark a by-election for his Sydney seat, threatening the government’s one-seat parliamentary majority.Despite Dutton getting the numbers for a challenge, there is no guarantee he will assume the top job, with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Treasurer Scott Morrison — both Turnbull allies — also in the running.During a three-way vote, whoever comes last in the first round will be eliminated with a second round taking place to decide who becomes leader.Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne, a Turnbull ally, refused to say who he would be backing and hit out at disruptive elements inside his party.”I think some people should have considered the greater good of the people of Australia, and the government, rather than their own self-interest and ambition,” he said.- Owe you an apology -The unrest is the latest chapter in a turbulent decade for Australian politics, with no leader managing to serve out a full term since former Prime Minister John Howard lost the 2007 election. If a new prime minister takes office Friday, it will be the seventh in 11 years in a remarkable revolving door at Canberra’s parliament house.Complicating matters, Dutton was referred to the solicitor-general over his eligibility to sit in parliament due to family financial interests in childcare centres that receive government subsidies — a possible breach of constitutional rules. The nation’s top lawyer Friday cleared him to continue in parliament. If he succeeds in taking the top job, Dutton will push Australian politics further to the right with a shift in several policies. He has made clear already that he would slash the migrant intake to counter population pressures and has not ruled out withdrawing Australia from the Paris climate agreement. The move to oust Turnbull was sparked by his plans on Monday to embed carbon emissions targets in law.Coupled with the government long trailing the opposition Labor party in opinion polls, the move sparked a revolt that quickly spiralled into calls for his head. One minister was so disillusioned with the push to oust Turnbull that he took to Twitter to apologise to the Australian people.”Australia. We owe you an apology. I’m sorry. You deserve better than many of the things our Federal Parliament has served up to you for the past 10 years,” wrote Nationals MP Darren Chester, whose party is in a coalition with the Liberals.last_img

Trump Walks Back Threat To Close US Border Giving Mexico A 1Year

first_img Share Evan Vucci/APPresident Trump said Thursday that he was giving Mexico one year to stem the flow of migrants and drugs coming across the Southern border, or else the U.S. would impose auto tariffs or close the border.President Trump is backing down from his threat to shut down the U.S. Southern border as soon as this week.Trump had issued the warning in a bid to curtail surging border crossings by asylum seekers from Central America.Instead, Trump is now giving Mexico “a one-year warning” to address his concerns about its handling of immigrants traveling through the country on the way to the United States. He also demanded that Mexico tamp down on the flow of drugs. If the Mexican government doesn’t respond in a manner acceptable to Trump within 12 months, he says, he will take action.“Mexico understands that we’re going to close the border or I’m going to tariff the cars — one or the other,” Trump said.He said he would likely start off with the auto tariffs, saying that would be a “very powerful incentive.”Trump’s warning about shutting down the border had been met with intense resistance from Republicans and some business groups, who warned there would be severe economic consequences. While Trump has walked back his plan to close the border, Democrats in the House of Representatives are moving against another immigration policy put forward by Trump.Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has announced the House will sue to block Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency in order to construct a wall on the Southern border.“The President’s sham emergency declaration and unlawful transfers of funds have undermined our democracy, contravening the vote of the bipartisan Congress, the will of the American people and the letter of the Constitution,” Pelosi said in a written statement. The Trump administration has argued that the situation at the border is a crisis and that the president is acting within his legal authority.Copyright 2019 NPR. Credit: Nature Photonics, doi: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41566-018-0327-9 Within 170 hours, the scientists achieved nanopores with cross-sections of 368 x 726 nm2 and lengths of 3.1 mm; to show that nanopores with millimeter-scale length could be engineered in a single etching step. Nanophotonic devices typically require such lattice dimensions from the micrometric to the centimeter scale, without brittle fracture of the crystal due to excessive stress. In this way, the scientists implemented a scheme to homogenously etch nanostructures and microstructured optical waveguides (MOWs), on the desired scale across the whole sample. To test if the observed selectivity of nanopore etching with YAG was transferrable to other crystal types, the scientists conducted similar experimental nanostructuring with sapphire. They found a parallel nanopore etch rate of ~1 x 105 in sapphire, similar to YAG and higher than the rate previously observed with microchannels etched in sapphire. Ródenas and co-workers formed millimeter-long nanopores in sapphire with cross-sections as small as ~120 nm and tested the feasibility of the method by engineering nanopore lattices etched for 170 hours without fracturing the crystal. The results showed an etching selectivity at a value larger than 1 x 105 at the molecuar level between the modified and pristine crystalline states, hitherto not observed in a photo-irradiated material. The observed value was approximately two orders of magnitude higher than that of alumina etch masks on silicon. Ródenas et al. determined the etching rate of unmodified YAG at ~1 nm/hour. The proposed method allowed the design and fabrication of nanophotonic elements inside a crystal that could provide the desired optical responses, at the subwavelength structure. The scientists were able to control the features of pore direction, size, shape, filling fraction and length of nanopore lattices in YAG crystals by combining 3DLW and wet etching. The YAG lattice was etched for 120 hours to obtain average pore dimensions in the x and y directions. The pore shape and size were controlled by tailoring the laser power and polarization. The diameter of etched nanopores depended on the laser power and could be studied for both linear and circular laser beam polarizations. As limitations of the technique, they found that 3-D photonic structures were characteristically isolated in space, needed supporting walls, and suffered shrinkage and a low optical damage threshold. Optical properties of materials are based on their chemistry and the inherent subwavelength architecture, although the latter remains to be characterized in depth. Photonic crystals and metamaterials have proven this by providing access through surface alterations to a new level of light manipulation beyond the known natural optical properties of materials. Yet, in the past three decades of research, technical methods have been unable to reliably nanostructure hard optical crystals beyond the material surface for in-depth optical characterization and related applications. The capability to control lattice formation down to the nanometer scale will be useful in practical photonic applications. For instance, photonic bandgap lattices can be designed with stopbands in the visible to mid-infrared range in solid-state laser crystals for photonic information technology. To further expand the potential of the 3-D nanolithography technique, Ródenas et al. engineered MOW (microstructured optical waveguides) with different lattice spacings and cavity sizes. They obtained dimensions in the range of a centimeter in length, with 700 nm pitch grating observed under visible light illumination. Ródenas et al. conducted theoretical and simulation methods of the subwavelength gratings prior to their material fabrication. For the numerical simulations, they used the finite element method (FEM) in COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2 software. The scientists used the same FEM software and method to model YAG MOWs prior to fabrication. This ability to create controlled 3-D nanostructures of crystals opens up new routes to design compact, monolithic solid-state lasers. The resulting crystals can incorporate traditional cavity elements (gratings, fibres, microfluidic cooling channels) or novel microresonators inside the crystal. The prospect of engineering large, nanostructured laser crystals will provide a new basis for precision technology in metrological applications and allow for potentially new applications with ultra-strong deformable laser nanofibers in microelectronics and for drug delivery in medicine. © 2019 Science X Network (1). A 1.4 numerical aperture (NA) oil-immersion objective was used to tightly focus the laser pulses inside the crystals. Ródenas et al. used computer-controlled XYZ linear stages for 3-D nanopositioning of the samples. After laser irradiation, they laterally polished the crystals to expose the irradiated structures followed by wet chemical etching. For this, the YAG crystals were etched in hot phosphoric acid in deionized water. A key technical limitation of the etching process was the difficulty in refreshing the exhausted acid inside the nanopores fabricated using the method detailed. , Nature Materials (1) Scheme to achieve infinitely long and homogeneously etched nanopore lattices by means of 3D-connecting etching pores. DOI: 10.1126/science.aar4165 , Science For example, laser lithography developed by the semiconductor industry is a surface-processing technique used for efficient etching of a range of materials, including silicon, silica glass and polymers. The process can produce high-quality two-dimensional (2-D) nanophotonic devices that can be extended to 3-D, which was demonstrated two decades ago with infrared femtosecond laser direct writing. However, the photopolymerized structures are impractical as they cannot be interfaced with other photonic elements. While 3-D nanostructured optical fibres have delivered functionalities well beyond those possible with ordinary unstructured glass to revolutionize nonlinear optics and optical communications, reliable manufacture of materials in crystalline media has remained elusive.Alternative methods include direct machining 3-D nanostructures with laser-induced dielectric breakdown and micro-explosions triggered inside transparent crystals to form voids and induce sub-micrometer structures within them. But such methods occurred at the risk of extended lattice damage and crack propagation. Therefore, despite efforts, a standard method for large-scale, 3-D volume crystal nanostructuring remains to be reported. In a recent study published in Nature Photonics, Airán Ródenas and co-workers at the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology and the Department of Physics departed from existing methods of engineering the crystal nanoarchitecture. Instead, they proposed a method whereby the inner chemical reactivity of a crystal, given by its wet etch rate, could be locally modified at the nanoscale to form dense nanopore lattices using multiphoton 3-D laser writing (3DLW). The interdisciplinary scientists showed that centimeter-long empty pore lattices with arbitrary features at the 100 nm scale could be created inside key crystals such as yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and sapphire, typically used for practical applications. Ródenas et al. performed direct laser writing before etching, creating the desired pore architecture inside the solid-state laser crystal for photonic applications. New insight into nanopatterning diamond The scientists engineered the photonic structures using circular polarization to reproducibly create air pores in the nanoscale region below 200 nm. The nanophotonic structures (air pore photonic lattices) created in the crystal maintained spatial resolution equivalent to that obtained with state-of-the-art multiphoton polymerization lithography. For practical applications, nanophotonic devices require robust and efficient optical interconnections to form large, complex circuit designs with other optical elements. To achieve this, Ródenas et al. controlled the differential etch rate to maintain large pore lengths between the photomodified volumes and the surrounding crystal. They used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe and prove the 3-D etching process. last_img read more

Michigan beachgoers left flabbergasted after surprise visitor wanders up to the shore

first_img SAUGATUCK, MI — Imagine working out for months to be beach-body ready for the summer, only to be upstaged by a deer. This is exactly what happened at Saugatuck Dunes State Park in Michigan, where a fearless buck wandered out of the sand dunes to dip its hooves in the water alongside fellow sunbathers. The deer, caught on video by an amused beachgoer, looks completely unbothered by the crowd. In fact, at one point, it cozies up next to a young girl sitting in a beach chair and licks her knee.Perhaps it was trying to tell her to move over and make room? It’s unclear how long the deer stayed or whether it safely returned to wherever it came from. Let’s hope it had a chance to cool off at the beach and that someone lent it some floaties.
