Expect New Faces atop House Armed Services Subcommittees Next Year

first_imgThe Republican side of the House Armed Services Committee, including the leadership posts for many of its subcommittees, will undergo significant turnover in the next Congress as seven GOP members leave due to retirement, primary defeat or a decision to seek higher office. The highest profile departure is Randy Forbes (R-Va.), who lost his primary last month after switching to a neighboring district. Forbes is the third most-senior Republican on the committee and the chair of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. His departure will leave a noticeable void and prompt a battle for the chairmanship of the panel. One likely candidate to fill his subcommittee post is fellow Virginian Rob Wittman (R), who now chairs the Readiness Subcommittee, which is responsible for BRAC and other installation and real estate matters. “It’s no secret that I’ve shown interest in chairing the Seapower Subcommittee in the past,” Wittman told CQ Roll Call. “And I’d be honored to serve in that capacity in the future.”The other likely candidate to replace Forbes on the Seapower panel is Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.)If Wittman were to leave his current post to take over Seapower, one committee member who has expressed interest in assuming the Readiness slot is Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), who now leads the Oversight and Investigations panel.Joe Heck (R-Nev.), chair of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, opted to leave the House to pursue the Senate seat being vacated by Minority Leader Harry Reid (D).Other Republicans who will not be on the committee in the 115th Congress, even before the results of the Novembers elections are determined, are Jeff Miller (Fla.), John Kline (Minn.), John Fleming (La.), Chris Gibson (N.Y.) and Rich Nugent (Fla.).On the Democratic side, at least four members are departing. Loretta Sanchez (Calif.), the No. 2 Democrat after Adam Smith (Wash.) is giving up her spot to run for the Senate, as is Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), who is running to unseat Sen. Mark Kirk (R). Two other Democratic members are retiring — Mark Takai (Hawaii) and Gwen Graham (Fla.). Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

The Chevy Blazer gets turbo power for 2020

first_img 2019 Nissan Murano review: Freshened, but not fresh enough 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is a sharply dressed sport utility… 81 Photos 5:05 12 Photos 26 Photos Tags More From Roadshow Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic, lane-keeping steering assist and road departure mitigation are all standard across the board. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The new RDX is built in East Liberty, Ohio. Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff Tags Post a comment Enlarge ImageChevy’s brand-new Blazer will soon be available with turbo power. Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow The Chevrolet Blazer is adding a third engine option to its roster for the 2020 model year. According to Car and Driver, a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine will join the 2020 Blazer lineup, producing 230 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.”We added the [2.0-liter engine] to the Blazer to offer customers more choice,” a Chevrolet spokesperson confirmed to Roadshow via email on Friday. This new powertrain looks to fit in nicely between the Blazer’s existing engines. The 2020 Blazer will still be available with a 193-horsepower, naturally aspirated, 2.5-liter I4 on base trims, and the upper-crust RS and Premier models will continue to use Chevy’s 308-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6. The 2.0T engine will be offered on the Blazer’s midtier 2LT and 3LT models, where it’ll be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the base 2.5-liter engine, which is offered exclusively with front-wheel drive, the 2.0-liter turbo-four will be available with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.Another advantage of the 2.0T engine will likely be fuel economy, though official 2020 Blazer EPA numbers are not available just yet. For reference, the 2019 Blazer is rated at 24 miles per gallon combined with its 2.5-liter engine, and either 21 or 22 mpg combined with the V6 (the former with all-wheel drive, the latter with front). The 2020 Blazer will start rolling into Chevy dealers this fall, and we expect the 2.0T models to be priced around $35,000. 69 Photos SUVs Crossovers 2019 GMC Sierra Denali review: So close to greatness Share your voice 42 Photos 52 Photos 2019 Honda Ridgeline: The commuter’s pickup truck 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: A tougher off-roader Car Industry More From Roadshow Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio.  Chevrolet 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport loves to hustle Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. The Honda Passport is built in Lincoln, Alabama. Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Chevrolet,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. 2019 Honda Ridgeline review: Light duty, heavy punch General Motors Chevrolet Honda Jeep Acuralast_img read more

15 Afghan Taliban killed in Afghanistan

first_imgSuspected Islamic State militants attacked Taliban fighters attending a funeral in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday and killed at least 15 in the latest violence between the rival groups, officials said.Another five Taliban were wounded in the attack on a house in Sayad district in Sari Pul province, the provincial police chief Abdul Qayum Baqizoi told AFP.A Taliban commander was among the dead, Baqizoi added. The attackers, who were armed with guns and grenades, fled the area. The Sari Pul governor’s spokesman Zabiullah Amani confirmed the death toll.”Daesh and Taliban have been fighting each other for more than two months in (neighbouring) Jowzjan and Sari Pul, killing hundreds on both sides,” Amani said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. The Taliban has not commented on the attack. IS did not immediately claim responsibility.IS first emerged in Afghanistan in 2014, overrunning large parts of the eastern provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar near the Pakistan border, where it engaged in a turf war with the Taliban. The group has since expanded north and has been battling the Taliban as well as Afghan and US forces. While the Taliban is Afghanistan’s largest militant group, IS has a small but potent presence in the country and has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to carry out devastating attacks in urban areas, including Kabul.last_img read more

Billboards Go HighTech

first_img 3 min read If that billboard off the highway suddenly changes from a promotion for a retail chain to a plug for a local car dealership, don’t get your eyes checked just yet. The next great frontier in outdoor and point-of-sale advertising is internet-connected digital screens, which vary in size from a few inches to many feet in length and width, allowing advertisers to showcase graphics and streaming media. Industry experts believe these boards will compete with, and may ultimately replace, traditional billboards and in-store signage.”It’s very reasonable to assume that up to 25 percent of traditional billboards could be converted [to digital displays] within the next 10 years,” says Stephen Freitas, chief marketing officer of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America Inc.That would translate into serious money. The OAAA estimates that advertisers spent $6.3 billion on outdoor advertising in 2005. With digital displays, messages can be updated with a few keystrokes instead of through the somewhat arduous process of tearing down a printed message and affixing a new one.In addition to outdoor applications, companies like The MediaTile Companyin Scotts Valley, California, are creating networks of in-store displays that are connected to the web. In MediaTile’s case, the networks use wireless cellular technology. Clients can upload and change content through web-based portals, creating content in the forms they want–anything from still image montages to narrowcasts, or live-action programming broadcast on a network of screens.”Once the networks are in, the screens can become a revenue stream through advertising and content creation,” says Keith Kelsen, MediaTile’s president and CEO. He adds that the screens can be used to feature product-specific information as part of a special display, or they can even broadcast employee-training programs. Setting up an electronic display system shouldn’t set you back too much: Kelsen estimates a business can install two screens for as little as $350, not including the costs of content creation and maintenance. The flexibility of these displays is driving demand, says Freitas. Big advertisers like McDonald’s can change their messages almost instantly, promoting breakfast sandwiches in the morning, salad options midday, and burgers and other fare during dinner hours. For smaller advertisers, digital displays can open up new possibilities, letting them share time on billboards in prime locations at a cost that suits their budgets.Freitas insists the emerging technology is a must-watch for the coming years: “Digital paper, or digital ink–a flexible material that can show different messages–is being developed,” he says. “It’s quite possible that this will have a significant impact on changing the scope of this type of advertising.” Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
