More sports in brief

first_imgDhawan ruled out of Sri Lanka tour NEW DELHI (AP): India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who struck a century in the opening game of an ongoing three-Test series in Sri Lanka, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour because of a hand injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a statement yesterday that Dhawan has a hairline fracture on his right hand. Dhawan scored 134 at Galle, but a poor team effort in the second innings saw India lose by 63 runs. The BCCI had earlier on Sunday drafted allrounder Stuart Binny into the side, but did not immediately name a replacement for Dhawan. The remaining two Tests will be played in Colombo – at Sara Oval from Thursday and at Sinhalese Sports Club from August 28. Allrounder Binny to join Test squad NEW DELHI (AP): Allrounder Stuart Binny has been drafted into the Indian team for their ongoing three-Test series in Sri Lanka. The Board of Control for Cricket in India named Binny as an additional member, taking the squad to 16, after India lost last week’s opening Test in Galle by 63 runs. Binny is expected to lend batting depth to the Virat Kohli-led side that went into the first Test with five specialist bowlers and failed badly in a chase of 176 runs. The second Test starts in Colombo on Thursday. Ramos signs new contract with Real MADRID (AP): Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos signed a new contract yesterday that will tie him to the club for the next five seasons. The 29-year-old Ramos had been linked to interest from Manchester United throughout the offseason. “As I said at my presentation 10 years ago, forming part of this cub is a dream and I want to keep living it as long as possible,” Ramos said at a news conference attended by new coach Rafa Benitez. Neither club nor player revealed the financial details of the contract, but Ramos said he received offers of more money from other clubs. “I know that these negotiations have been drawn out, but my heart has always been here,” Ramos said. “If this had been about money I wouldn’t have stayed.” Since arriving from Sevilla in 2005, Ramos has helped Madrid win one Champions League trophy, three Spanish league titles and two Copa del Rey titles. His injury-time goal in the final of the 2014 Champions League forced extra time, and Madrid ended up beating crosstown rival Atletico Madrid 4-1 for its record 10th European Cup. “Sergio Ramos is a symbol for Madrid’s faithful,” club president Florentino Perez said after Ramos had signed his new deal. Ramos also formed part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning team and their two European champion squads.last_img read more

first_img20 March 2014 South Africa’s Comair announced on Wednesday that it has placed an order for eight Boeing 737 MAX 8s, valued at US$830-million (approximately R9-billion), becoming the first African airline to order the aircraft. “We’re proud to be the first African operator to announce an order for the 737 MAX,” Comair CEO Erik Venter said in a joint statement with Boeing. “This investment in Comair’s fleet upgrade is fundamental to its business strategy of consistently improving customer service and value while ensuring a sustainable airline.” Johannesburg-based Comair operates Africa’s first low-cost carrier, kulula.com, offering flights to South Africa’s major cities. Dunga succeeds Scolari as Brazil manager

first_imgBrazil named Dunga as their manager.Brazil named Dunga as their manager for the second time on Tuesday, two weeks after they were hammered 7-1 by Germany in the World Cup semi-finals which led to the resignation of former coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. The 50-year-old Dunga, who captained Brazil to their fourth world title in 1994, was last in charge of the national team in 2010 when he was sacked for failing to take them further than the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa.”I am immensely happy to be back,” he told reporters.Dunga, who played for a host of clubs in Brazil, Japan, Germany and Italy, was known for his combative midfield style as a player and led Brazil to their fourth World Cup in the United States in 1994.He was appointed Brazil manager for the first time in 2006 but although he won both the 2007 Copa America and the 2009 Confederations Cup, his team crumbled when they went behind to the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals and lost 2-1.last_img read more

Google Chromes Canvas app lets you unleash your artistic ability

first_img Lenovo Smart Clock: $59.99 (save $20) $90 at Daily Steals via Google Express Comments Post a comment Lenovo 130-15AST 15.6-inch laptop: $210 (save $90) Use promo code 19LABOR10 to get an unusually good deal on JBL’s interesting hybrid product — not quite headphones, and not quite a traditional speaker, but something you wear like neckphones to listen to music on the go. Though not technically a Labor Day sale, it’s happening during Labor Day sale season — and it’s too good not to share. Nationwide Distributors, via Google Express, has just about the best AirPods deal we’ve seen (when you apply promo code ZBEDWZ at checkout). This is for the second-gen AirPods with the wireless charging case. Can’t imagine these will last long at this price, so if you’re interested, act fast. HP Laptop 15t Value: $520 (save $780) I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. Billboards Go HighTech

first_img 3 min read If that billboard off the highway suddenly changes from a promotion for a retail chain to a plug for a local car dealership, don’t get your eyes checked just yet. The next great frontier in outdoor and point-of-sale advertising is internet-connected digital screens, which vary in size from a few inches to many feet in length and width, allowing advertisers to showcase graphics and streaming media. Industry experts believe these boards will compete with, and may ultimately replace, traditional billboards and in-store signage.”It’s very reasonable to assume that up to 25 percent of traditional billboards could be converted [to digital displays] within the next 10 years,” says Stephen Freitas, chief marketing officer of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America Inc.That would translate into serious money. The OAAA estimates that advertisers spent $6.3 billion on outdoor advertising in 2005. With digital displays, messages can be updated with a few keystrokes instead of through the somewhat arduous process of tearing down a printed message and affixing a new one.In addition to outdoor applications, companies like The MediaTile Companyin Scotts Valley, California, are creating networks of in-store displays that are connected to the web. In MediaTile’s case, the networks use wireless cellular technology. Clients can upload and change content through web-based portals, creating content in the forms they want–anything from still image montages to narrowcasts, or live-action programming broadcast on a network of screens.”Once the networks are in, the screens can become a revenue stream through advertising and content creation,” says Keith Kelsen, MediaTile’s president and CEO. He adds that the screens can be used to feature product-specific information as part of a special display, or they can even broadcast employee-training programs. Setting up an electronic display system shouldn’t set you back too much: Kelsen estimates a business can install two screens for as little as $350, not including the costs of content creation and maintenance. The flexibility of these displays is driving demand, says Freitas. Big advertisers like McDonald’s can change their messages almost instantly, promoting breakfast sandwiches in the morning, salad options midday, and burgers and other fare during dinner hours. For smaller advertisers, digital displays can open up new possibilities, letting them share time on billboards in prime locations at a cost that suits their budgets.Freitas insists the emerging technology is a must-watch for the coming years: “Digital paper, or digital ink–a flexible material that can show different messages–is being developed,” he says. “It’s quite possible that this will have a significant impact on changing the scope of this type of advertising.” Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Cayman Islands sees record growth in Canadian arrivals

first_imgTags: Cayman Islands Posted by Share Cayman Islands sees record growth in Canadian arrivals << Previous PostNext Post >>center_img Friday, January 12, 2018 Travelweek Group TORONTO — The Cayman Islands is seeing significant growth in tourist arrivals from Canada, with visitation up 6.37% in 2017.The destination saw record-breaking arrivals in both air and cruise visitation, representing the best year on record with a total of 418,403 stayover visitors (+8.55% over 2016), and 1,728,444 cruisers. U.S. visitors also saw an uptick last year, with a growth rate of 13.44%.For the seventh straight year (June through December), air arrivals surpassed all previously recorded statistics. A total of 49,003 stayover visitors arrived in December, an increase of 21.61% over December 2016 and up 20.8% over December 2014, which held the previous record for best ranked December in recorded history.According to the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, December increases were fuelled by growth predominantly in North America, namely the U.S. and Canada, which saw increases of 27.43% and 22.71%, respectively, over 2016. These two markets represent the highest standout growth.More news:  Flights cancelled as British Airways hit by computer problem“The performance of the country’s tourism sector and all who played a role in attracting more visitors to the destination should be extraordinarily proud of their efforts,” said Moses Kirkconnell, Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism. “It is the mandate of the Ministry of Tourism to facilitate annual growth in visitation; however, it is a collective effort that makes it a success. I encourage all of us in the tourism industry and its auxiliary partners to use this accomplishment as a springboard for even greater success in 2018.”Last year’s success can be attributed to a diversified marketing plan that increased brand awareness on a global scale. Key initiatives launched in 2017 included the ‘Worry Free Hurricane Guarantee’, which gave travellers peace of mind during one of the most active hurricane seasons for the Caribbean to date.Looking ahead to 2018, tourism numbers are expected to remain on an upward trend thanks to increased air capacity from carriers like Air Canada, which launched six nonstop flights per week on Dec. 15, 2017, to run through April 2, 2018. Aviation, says the Department of Tourism, is a catalyst for driving Canadian and overall international visitation.More news:  Sunwing ready to launch Mazatlán-Quebec City direct this winter“The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism and our island partners in Grand Cayman are absolutely delighted with the expanded service and the impact this has had and will continue to have on driving tourism to the destination,” said Raymond Mathias, Business Development Manager for the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism. This added lift will boost both leisure and business travel to the destination as we continue to build on the growth we’ve already seen in 2017.”last_img read more
