Jon Stewart on New Yorkers Obama Cover Its Just a Fing Cartoon

first_imgCheck out the video: Among the absurd amount of reactionary hype the New Yorker’s controversial Obama cover generated this week, my favorite response comes from the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, who sums up some of my sentiments nicely. He also criticizes Obama for denouncing the cover:”Really? You know what your response should’ve been? It’s very easy: Barack Obama is in no way upset about the cartoon that depicts him as a Muslim extremist. Because you know who gets upset about cartoons? Muslim extremists! Of which Barack Obama is not. It’s just a f*cking cartoon!”last_img

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 4 Wilmington Students Named To Deans List At WPI

first_imgWORCESTER, MA — The following local residents were among 1,598 students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2019 semester:Zachary Abbott is a member of the class of 2019 majoring in civil engineering.Michael Gake is a member of the class of 2020 majoring in industrial engineering and professional writing.David Robie is a member of the class of 2021 majoring in aerospace engineering.Bridget Sullivan is a member of the class of 2020 majoring in mechanical engineering. The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A-level in courses and projects.“WPI’s academic programs are rigorous and require a level of independence beyond what is required in traditional courses. WPI students go beyond the classroom to work on open-ended problems in and for communities around the world. The problems are important and the impact is real,” said dean of undergraduate studies Arthur C. Heinricher. “Some of this nation’s best and brightest students come to WPI to study engineering and science and business and the humanities. Those named to the Dean’s List have excelled in all of their work, and we are exceptionally proud of these outstanding students.”About Worcester Polytechnic InstituteWPI, a global leader in project-based learning, is a distinctive, top-tier technological university founded in 1865 on the principle that students learn most effectively by applying the theory learned in the classroom to the practice of solving real-world problems. Recognized by the National Academy of Engineering with the 2016 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education, WPI’s pioneering project-based curriculum engages undergraduates in solving important scientific, technological, and societal problems throughout their education and at more than 50 project centers around the world. WPI offers more than 50 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs across 14 academic departments in science, engineering, technology, business, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts. Its faculty and students pursue groundbreaking research to meet ongoing challenges in health and biotechnology; robotics and the internet of things; advanced materials and manufacturing; cyber, data, and security systems; learning science; and more.(NOTE: The above announcement is from WPI via Merit.)Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. 2020 Volvo V60 XC60 get the Polestar Engineered treatment

first_imgA trio of Polestar Engineered Volvos — how lovely. Volvo If you’re bummed you didn’t get one of Volvo’s superlimited-production S60 Polestar Engineered sedans before they sold out, well, buck up, little camper. Volvo announced Wednesday it’s bringing a few more high-performance treats to the US — and this time, they’ll even be wagon- and SUV-shaped.Starting this summer, you’ll be able to order Polestar Engineered versions of the V60 wagon and XC60 crossover. These cars get the same upgrades as the S60 Polestar Engineered sedan, including a nifty Öhlins suspension and bigger brakes with gold-painted calipers. On top of that, you’ll get a similar list of visual enhancements, including new wheels, black chrome tailpipes and a gloss black grille.Of course, you also get a power boost. All Polestar Engineered cars are powered by a higher-output version of Volvo’s T8 Twin-Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain, putting out 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. Compared with the standard XC60 T8, that’s an increase of 15 horsepower and 22 pound-feet. And since Volvo doesn’t offer a T8-trim V60 in the US, this is your only way to get a plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s excellent wagon.Volvo Polestar Engineered ModelsBig wheels and gold calipers look rad on the XC60 crossover. Volvo We’ll admit, the Polestar Engineered model isn’t our favorite version of the S60 sedan. Its powertrain isn’t as smooth as the turbocharged T5 and turbocharged-and-supercharged T6 options. Plus, the transition between regenerative and mechanical braking is really harsh. We found this to be true of the not-for-US V60 T8, as well.Volvo hasn’t announced pricing for these models, but based on current XC60 T8 numbers, it’s safe to assume they’ll land somewhere north of $60,000. Unlike the 2019 model year S60 Polestar Engineered, which was limited to just 20 cars for the US, there will be “considerably more” 2020 models, a Volvo spokesperson confirmed to Roadshow. That includes a second run of S60s, and Volvo says the 2020 models “will be available via traditional channels and not through Care by Volvo” (the automaker’s subscription service).Considering the buzz the S60 Polestar Engineered sedan generated when it launched, I can’t imagine Volvo will have a hard time finding homes for its latest batch of hot hybrids. Besides, that V60 just looks hella good. The Chevy Blazer gets turbo power for 2020

first_img 2019 Nissan Murano review: Freshened, but not fresh enough 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is a sharply dressed sport utility… 81 Photos 5:05 12 Photos 26 Photos Tags More From Roadshow Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic, lane-keeping steering assist and road departure mitigation are all standard across the board. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The new RDX is built in East Liberty, Ohio. Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff Tags Post a comment Enlarge ImageChevy’s brand-new Blazer will soon be available with turbo power. Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow The Chevrolet Blazer is adding a third engine option to its roster for the 2020 model year. According to Car and Driver, a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine will join the 2020 Blazer lineup, producing 230 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.”We added the [2.0-liter engine] to the Blazer to offer customers more choice,” a Chevrolet spokesperson confirmed to Roadshow via email on Friday. This new powertrain looks to fit in nicely between the Blazer’s existing engines. The 2020 Blazer will still be available with a 193-horsepower, naturally aspirated, 2.5-liter I4 on base trims, and the upper-crust RS and Premier models will continue to use Chevy’s 308-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6. The 2.0T engine will be offered on the Blazer’s midtier 2LT and 3LT models, where it’ll be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the base 2.5-liter engine, which is offered exclusively with front-wheel drive, the 2.0-liter turbo-four will be available with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.Another advantage of the 2.0T engine will likely be fuel economy, though official 2020 Blazer EPA numbers are not available just yet. For reference, the 2019 Blazer is rated at 24 miles per gallon combined with its 2.5-liter engine, and either 21 or 22 mpg combined with the V6 (the former with all-wheel drive, the latter with front). The 2020 Blazer will start rolling into Chevy dealers this fall, and we expect the 2.0T models to be priced around $35,000. 69 Photos SUVs Crossovers 2019 GMC Sierra Denali review: So close to greatness Share your voice 42 Photos 52 Photos 2019 Honda Ridgeline: The commuter’s pickup truck 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: A tougher off-roader Car Industry More From Roadshow Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio.  Chevrolet 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport loves to hustle Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. The Honda Passport is built in Lincoln, Alabama. Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Most trims get a nine-speed automatic but the top Touring and Elite trims now use a 10-speed automatic with stop-start technology. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Chevrolet,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. 2019 Honda Ridgeline review: Light duty, heavy punch General Motors Chevrolet Honda Jeep Acuralast_img read more

Worlds first Chromebook Enterprise from Dell took close to 2 years to

first_imgDell Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise. Sarah Tew/CNET Chromebooks — laptops that run on Google’s Chrome OS — are a growing part of the global PC market. The devices have consumed a large part of the education market in the past few years and have steadily pushed into the business world. Dell announced Monday the world’s first Chromebook Enterprise two-in-one and laptop to help solidify Chrome OS’ business presence. The two devices are designed to satisfy the IT execs faced with a new world that demands choice, said Brett Hansen, VP of Dell client software and general manager data security. “They want to be able to choose environments that make the most sense for either my organization, my department or even an individual.” Within that construct, Dell started conversations with Google about Chrome.Google had been talking with many businesses that wanted their workforce both using the cloud and a modern operating system, said Eve Phillips, Google’s group product manager for Chrome OS Commercial. “Things get lost, they’re not secure, real laptops get left places, for all of these reasons — for end users and IT — there are tons of benefits” for moving to a cloud-based OS.”At the same time,” Phillips added, “organizations also want to take advantage of what the cloud offers without throwing away everything they’ve got.”04-dell-latitude-5300-2-in-1-chromebook-enterpriseDell Latitude 5300 two-in-one Chromebook Enterprise. Sarah Tew/CNET Chromebook Enterprise aims to solve this from a software perspective with both Chrome OS and the enterprise features it enables, as well as combining it with the hardware, support and sale infrastructure from Dell. “It’s bringing all of the pieces together that organizations have grown to expect along with the modern OS of Chrome devices,” Phillips said.Dell and Google have been working on the extensive joint effort for close to two years. “To really get the benefits of both companies, there were things we had to do differently,” Phillips said. Those included integrating the security of verified boot and Google’s boot security chip into the hardware as well as enabling all of Dell’s support infrastructure.03-dell-latitude-5400-chromebook-enterprise Sarah Tew/CNET For Dell’s part, in addition to its hardware and support, the company is making broader adoption easier. “Right out of the gate we’re going to sell this in 50 countries and we’ll have 10 different keyboard languages,” Hansen said. And then there are the two devices themselves — a traditional clamshell and a two-in-one — which are designed as mainstream devices developed for a larger workforce.Built for durability, they’re made from carbon fiber and can be easily serviced by an IT department. They’re also highly configurable with everything from a Celeron up to eighth-generation Intel Core processors, up to 32GB of DDR4 memory and enterprise-class PCIe NVMe SSD drives up to 1TB. The 14-inch Latitude 5400’s battery can last up to 20 hours, while the 13-inch Latitude 5300 two-in-one can go for up to 14 hours, depending on configuration and tasks.Other benefits include unified endpoint management with VMware’s Workspace One, a revamped Google Admin panel with significantly faster load times and the option to enable managed Linux environments on Chromebooks. The Latitude 5400 price will start at $699 and the Latitude 5300 starts at $819. 15 Afghan Taliban killed in Afghanistan

first_imgSuspected Islamic State militants attacked Taliban fighters attending a funeral in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday and killed at least 15 in the latest violence between the rival groups, officials said.Another five Taliban were wounded in the attack on a house in Sayad district in Sari Pul province, the provincial police chief Abdul Qayum Baqizoi told AFP.A Taliban commander was among the dead, Baqizoi added. The attackers, who were armed with guns and grenades, fled the area. The Sari Pul governor’s spokesman Zabiullah Amani confirmed the death toll.”Daesh and Taliban have been fighting each other for more than two months in (neighbouring) Jowzjan and Sari Pul, killing hundreds on both sides,” Amani said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. The Taliban has not commented on the attack.
